A sad accident happened when a 32-year-old woman, Courtney Sanford, died in a head-on crash on a US highway. This occurred shortly after she posted a Facebook status and shared selfies. The event shows the risks of distracted driving. Sanford’s final Facebook update was sent only one minute before the crash was reported to police.
On Thursday morning at 8:33, Courtney shared on Facebook, “The happy song makes me so HAPPY,” showing her happiness. Only one minute later, at 8:34, police were called about a serious crash on Interstate 85 in North Carolina. Sanford, driving by herself, went into the center divider and hit a recycling truck. The crash made her car burn, and the truck was pushed off the road. Sanford sadly died in the crash.
Officials said there was no sign of speeding, drugs, or alcohol in the crash. She was just traveling to her job when the accident happened.
Later, friends shared her online activity, showing the link between her Facebook post and the crash. Her social media posts, like selfies and status updates, happened during the time of the crash. This showed she was using her phone while driving.
Lt. Chris Weisner from the High Point Police Department called the event a real-life public service message showing the risks of texting while driving. “In seconds, a life ended just so she could tell some friends she was happy. It’s really not worth it,” Weisner stated, stressing the need to stay focused when driving.
The accident acts as a sad reminder of what can happen with distracted driving. “Though it is upsetting, it is a serious reminder for everyone—you must pay attention while driving,” Lt. Weisner added.
John Wallace Thompson, a 73-year-old driver of the recycling truck, was not hurt in the crash. The tragic accident has left Sanford’s family and friends mourning and increased awareness about the dangers of using social media while driving.
