A woman feels angry and hurt when her husband forgets their 50th wedding anniversary, so she throws his things into the gutter — until he returns with an unusual explanation.
Betty Carmichael believed her husband had forgotten their anniversary once again, but this time, she was done tolerating it. She had been married to Donald for fifty years and deserved better!
Betty had stood by Donald through everything, giving him three children and the best years of her life. And what did she get in return? Not even a cheap bouquet of daisies, let alone red roses.
She looked at the wall clock and frowned. It was 9:30 p.m. Donald hadn’t even come home for the special dinner she had made! This was the final straw!
Two hours later, Betty heard his car pull into the driveway and grimly smiled. Donald was in for a rough night.
She soon heard him shouting, “BETTY! What’s going on here!”
She marched outside, hands on her hips. “What do you want?” she asked.
Donald was standing in the garden, looking furious. He pointed at an old recliner on the lawn next to boxes of books and other items.
“Why are my things outside?” he asked. “Have you gone mad, woman?”
“Mad?” Betty yelled, and the neighbor’s lights came on. “You’re the mad one! Have you lost your memory? I’m kicking you out. I’m divorcing you!”
“Divorcing me?” Donald stammered, shocked. “I’m seventy-eight and you’re seventy-five, and you want a DIVORCE?”
“Yes!” Betty replied angrily. “Do you think I’m not still a woman because I’m seventy-five? That you can take me for granted? I won’t stand for it!”
“Betty,” Donald pleaded. “Calm down. What’s this about?”
“You forgot our anniversary AGAIN!” Betty snapped. “We’ve been together for fifty years, and I have to remind you about my birthday. But you were definitely there for the wedding!”
“Bets,” Donald argued. “That was the happiest day of my life…”
“So why can’t you remember it?” Betty asked. “Why don’t you bring me flowers or take me dancing? You don’t love me anymore. You haven’t loved me in years.”
Donald shook his head. “I love you, Betty,” he said. “You’re the love of my life…”
“Then why didn’t you come home for dinner?” Betty asked. “I made a special meal, lit candles, and put out flowers, and you didn’t show up! Were you with another woman?”
Donald grinned. “Yes,” he said, stepping aside. Standing there was a slim girl in her twenties with Betty’s blue eyes and Donald’s big smile.
“Hannah!” Betty shouted and rushed down the steps, almost falling before Donald caught her. She hugged the girl and started crying.
“Oh, Hannah,” she sobbed. “It’s been so long! I missed you!”
“Hi, Gran Betty,” Hannah said. “Sorry we’re late, but my flight was delayed. Poor Gran Donald waited for hours!”
Betty looked at her husband. “You knew she was coming and didn’t tell me?” she asked.
“I didn’t just know,” Donald said proudly. “I planned it! It was supposed to be your anniversary surprise, but the flight was delayed. You always talk about missing your only granddaughter, so I got her a plane ticket!”
“Oh, Don!” Betty cried, hugging her husband. “I’m sorry! I started thinking all kinds of crazy things…”
“Betty,” Donald said gently. “I haven’t looked at another woman in fifty years and don’t plan to start now.”
“Donald,” Betty said. “What did I do to deserve you?”
“I don’t know,” Don replied. “But we’re going to have fun getting my stuff back into the house where it belongs!”
With Hannah’s help, Don and Betty got everything tidied up and sat down for a late-night snack. “By the way,” Donald said. “I have another surprise for you. Tomorrow night, we’re having a party with our children and friends. I asked Father Bartholomew to come so we can renew our vows.”
“But what will I wear?” gasped Betty.
“I’m not sure about the dress, but I have a ring!” Don said, kneeling and pulling out a small jewelry box. “Betty Delancy Carmichael, will you marry me again?”
The next day, the Carmichaels celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in style. Betty looked lovely in a cream-colored suit and a little veil. As Donald kissed her, she promised never to doubt him again as long as she lived.
