McDonald’s, one of the biggest fast-food chains in the world, turned its famous arches upside down. This unique change was made to celebrate women and remind them that they are all amazing in their own unique ways.

International Women’s Day Celebration

On March 8, 2018, which is International Women’s Day, McDonald’s decided to reverse its arches. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The reversal of the arches was a part of this celebration.

Confusion and Clarification

Many people were surprised by the change. Some even speculated it was related to McDonald’s dispute with Wendy’s. However, this speculation was incorrect. A McDonald’s spokesperson clarified that the symbol was reversed to celebrate women everywhere.

Changes at Lynwood, California

McDonald’s chose to change the signage at its Lynwood, California restaurant. They kept the same logos on social media but made physical changes at this location. Employees wore caps and shirts with the “W”-shaped insignia, and 100 restaurants across the nation had unique packaging with the logo.

Statement from McDonald’s Chief Diversity Officer

McDonald’s Chief Diversity Officer, Wendy Lewis, said, “To celebrate the remarkable achievements of women everywhere, especially in our restaurants, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women’s Day for the first time in our brand’s history.”

Recognizing Women Globally

Lauren Altman, a spokesperson for McDonald’s, stated that the new design was made to recognize women globally. She mentioned that McDonald’s has a long history of empowering women to grow and succeed in the workplace. In the United States, six out of ten restaurant managers are women. The company takes pride in its diversity.

Support from Other Brands

McDonald’s is not the only company honoring women and promoting gender equality. Johnnie Walker released a “Jane Walker” bottle, with $1 from each bottle going to charities supporting women’s rights. Stephanie Jacoby, Johnnie Walker’s vice president, stated, “Gender conversations are still very important in society. We think this is the ideal moment to introduce our Jane Walker logo and assist progressive organizations that align with our mission.”

Brawny also contributed to the effort by donating $100,000 to Girls, Inc. and replacing the Brawny Man with a woman on their packaging.
