Small changes in our daily schedule can make a big difference. Kentucky teacher Malissa Sergent Lewis experienced this firsthand one summer morning in 2016 when she impulsively chose a different way to work.

Hoping to get to her elementary school quicker, Malissa, who was behind schedule, opted for a back road instead of the main highway. She didn’t know this slight change would greatly alter her day.

As she drove down the lonely road, Malissa spotted something unusual: a moving trash bag. This wasn’t just any bag—it seemed to be alive.

Driven by curiosity, Malissa decided to investigate further. She saw that the bag was tightly knotted on purpose as she carefully approached. She gently tore open a corner of the bag and discovered a surprising scene inside.

Inside the bag was a puppy, which started to wag its tail vigorously as soon as it saw light. Malissa was shocked by her find. The puppy had been left alone on the road, trapped in a trash bag for who knows how long.

A Deeply Felt Response

Unable to overlook the helpless puppy, Malissa chose to bring it with her to work. Later, her son took the dog home, and they visited a vet to ensure its health.

Malissa attempted to find out how the puppy ended up in a roadside bag but couldn’t. Concerned it might be lost or stolen, she contacted animal control. Surprisingly, no one had reported the puppy as missing or claimed it.

With much care and love, Malissa and her family decided to adopt the puppy. However, Malissa couldn’t grasp the cruelty of someone capable of such a terrible act.

An Unexpected Turn

Reflecting on the incident, Malissa realized she wouldn’t have found the abandoned puppy if she hadn’t changed her routine that day. This fortunate encounter changed the narrative, saving the dog from a dire fate.
