On Reddit, a woman shared her story. She mentioned that her fiancé teased her for making more money than him. He expected her to pay for meals for himself and his friends.

She talked about it after she got a 30% raise. “My fiancé (M37) and I got engaged five months ago. We avoid talking about money because he prefers it that way. After my recent pay increase, he started using the fact that I earn 30% more as a reason for me to foot the bills for him and his friends. Whenever I refused or questioned why, he’d justify it by saying, ‘the 30% that’s why,’ implying that I didn’t deserve the raise or it was unfair.

Before leaving, she made it clear she wouldn’t pay this time since he had tricked her into paying before. He had often publicly asked her to pay for his and his friends’ meals, tricking her into it. Being too polite, she would just smile and pay to avoid conflict, especially in public like at restaurants. Last Tuesday, he invited her for dinner with his friends, and she immediately told him she would not be paying for their meals. He seemed to accept it, saying, “Got this, no worries.”

However, during dinner, her fiancé whispered to her that she would be paying again, to which she softly said no. She thought he was relying on her to stay silent in front of his friends and the public. He said, “You have enough money to pay for everyone’s food.”

She got very angry and, after settling her own bill, left the place. “I kept my cool instead of reacting angrily. After our orders were taken and bills divided, I paid for mine, excused myself to the bathroom, then left, drove my car home.

Later, her fiancé texted and called to ask where she was. She texted back, explaining how upset she was that he had put her in this situation and had basically tricked her into paying for his and his friends’ meals. After saying she was going home, she stopped responding.

“An hour later he arrived and started yelling at me, calling me selfish, irrational, cheapskate, and childish for sneaking out like that and leaving him with a bill he couldn’t pay (He had to call his brother for help),” she added as they argued about the incident. After a tense argument, he left. His friends avoided discussing it with her, but he mentioned they were disappointed in her actions and suggested he rethink the kind of woman he wants to marry.
