Mary married Ed, but it came with a big problem: his mother, Scarlett. Scarlett never hid her dislike for Mary. From the wedding day to every visit, she found ways to make Mary feel bad.
Mary’s patience was running thin. Scarlett's constant interference would soon cause a big conflict.
On the way to Scarlett’s house, Mary felt uneasy. Scarlett had always made her unwelcome. Mary clearly remembered the wedding—Scarlett showed up with a veil, thankfully not in a full wedding dress. Scarlett was the kind of mother who couldn't let her son go.
As they arrived, Mary took a deep breath, bracing for the usual insults. Scarlett greeted them at the door with a wide smile and hugged Ed tightly. “Oh, my baby! Finally, you’re here!” she said, as if they hadn’t seen each other in years.
Ed tried to pull away gently. “Mom, it’s only been a week,” he said. Scarlett ignored him and looked at Mary.
“Well, Mary, looks like you’ve put on some weight,” Scarlett said with a smirk. Mary forced a small smile and replied politely, “Good to see you too, Scarlett,” hoping to keep the peace.
At dinner, Scarlett began her usual criticisms. “Mary can’t cook. She doesn’t have a respectable job. And honestly,” Scarlett sniffed, “her style is just awful!” She glanced at Ed, waiting for him to agree.
Mary gripped her fork tightly but stayed silent, knowing an argument wouldn’t help. Then Scarlett crossed the line.
“So,” Scarlett said, staring at Mary, “when will I get a grandchild? Or maybe,” she added with a sly smile, “Mary has… problems?”
Mary froze. She and Ed had been trying for a baby for months, and Scarlett’s words stung deeply. “How dare you!” Mary snapped, her voice shaking. “Maybe the problem is your son!”
Scarlett leaned back, amused. “That’s absurd. My son is perfectly fine. But you, Mary… who knows what you were up to before Ed?”
Mary’s anger boiled over. “You’re horrible!” she yelled, turning to Ed. “Are you just going to let her talk to me like this?”
Scarlett gave Ed a sharp look. “Yes, Eddie, tell your wife to behave,” she sneered.
Ed shrugged, barely glancing up from his phone. “Figure it out yourselves,” he mumbled.
Scarlett leaned closer to Mary, whispering, “I hear herbal tea helps people like you. Maybe you should try it.”
Feeling sick and overwhelmed, Mary excused herself to the bathroom. She needed a moment to calm down.
The drive home was silent. Mary felt angry, hurt, and exhausted. Suddenly, she turned to Ed. “Can we stop at the pharmacy?”
Ed sighed but pulled into the lot. Mary quickly bought a pregnancy test, her hands trembling. At home, she went straight to the bathroom. Her heart pounded as she waited. Slowly, two lines appeared. She was pregnant. Relief and happiness washed over her, but Ed’s reaction was cold.
“That’s… good,” he said without looking up from his phone.
Mary felt crushed. She’d hoped the news would bring them closer, but Ed seemed more distant. Days passed, and his behavior worsened.
One morning, while Ed was in the shower, Mary noticed his phone buzzing. Normally, she’d ignore it, but her suspicions got the better of her. She saw it now had a passcode. She guessed his birthdate, and it unlocked.
A message appeared: a photo of a woman in revealing clothes with the words, “Can’t wait to see you, baby.”
Mary’s hands shook as she read the messages. Ed had been lying to her and the other woman, claiming he was a wealthy business owner.
When Ed came out, Mary confronted him, holding his phone. “What is this?” she demanded.
Ed grabbed the phone. “None of your business.”
“None of my business?” she yelled. “I’m your pregnant wife, and you’re cheating on me!”
He sneered. “How do I know it’s even mine?”
Mary’s heart sank. “We’ve been trying for months. How can you say that?”
Ed shrugged. “Convenient timing,” he said coldly. “Right when things go bad, you’re suddenly pregnant.”
Mary was furious. “You’ve been lying and cheating for months!” She clutched her stomach. But Ed stayed calm.
“I’m filing for divorce,” he said flatly. “This is over. I’ll take the house, the money—everything.”
“This house was my father’s!” Mary shot back.
“It’s in both our names,” he said, smirking. “And the baby? Prove it’s mine.”
Devastated, Mary turned to Scarlett, the last person she thought could help. She shared everything—screenshots, threats, and Ed’s betrayal. Scarlett was shocked.
“He lied to me too,” Scarlett admitted, her voice trembling. “He said he needed money for your medical bills. Every penny his father left me, gone.”
Mary showed Scarlett their empty account. “He’s been taking money for months.”
Scarlett’s face hardened. “I can’t believe my son would do this.”
They made a plan. Scarlett promised, “I’ll make sure he pays. I’ll protect you and the baby.”
Together, they confronted Ed. Mary presented the evidence. “Sign the house over, pay child support, or this goes public.”
Cornered, Ed agreed. But Scarlett had one more move. She visited Ed’s mistress, exposing his lies. The woman was furious and cut ties with him.
Days later, Scarlett and Mary were having tea when they heard loud banging on the door. Ed’s voice rang out. “You promised not to tell!”
Mary opened the door calmly. “I didn’t say anything.”
Scarlett stepped forward. “I did. It’s time you faced the consequences.”
As Ed shouted, the police arrived, alerted by neighbors. They took him away, his threats fading in the distance.
Inside, Mary and Scarlett exchanged a quiet smile. They had become allies, ready to protect the family’s future—especially for Mary’s child.
