A Statue for the Queen of Rock & Roll
In Brownsville, Tennessee, where the legendary Tina Turner grew up, plans are underway to honor her with a magnificent bronze statue. This grand tribute comes about a year after her death, fulfilling a promise made by the city’s mayor, Bill Rawls, Jr.
A Fitting Location
The statue will stand six feet tall and will be placed in Heritage Park, a meaningful location close to the high school Turner once attended. It’s not just any statue, but a $150,000 bronze figure, capturing the essence of Tina’s vibrant legacy. The city has already made the initial payment, and fundraising efforts to cover the remainder will begin immediately.
More Than Just a Statue
But the homage doesn’t stop with the statue. Plans are in place to construct a sprawling new plaza within Heritage Park, with Tina’s statue as the central feature. This development aims to create a space that celebrates Tina Turner’s impact on music and culture, complementing the existing Tina Turner Museum in the city.
Celebrating Tina Turner’s Legacy
Mayor Rawls believes that situating the statue near Turner’s old high school is a poignant way to preserve her memory in the community. Sculptor Fred “Ajano” Ajanogha has been commissioned to create the statue, which is expected to be unveiled in fall 2025.
Tributes Pour In
Tina Turner, who passed away last year at the age of 83 after battling various health issues, was remembered by celebrities like Lizzo, Patti LaBelle, and John Fogerty, who paid heartfelt tributes to the music icon. Now, her hometown is set to honor her in the grandest way possible, ensuring that her remarkable life and career are celebrated for generations to come.
