On my 78th birthday, all I really wanted was to visit my daughter, so I decided to surprise her.
When she opened the door, she looked uneasy and asked, “Dad, what brings you here?”
I gave her a warm smile and said, “I thought it would be nice to celebrate my birthday with you.” But her reaction was unexpected.
“Dad, you can’t stay. There’s a lot happening right now.”
Feeling a bit hurt, I suggested waiting on the couch until she was free, but she insisted, “No, Dad, you need to leave right away.”
As I made my way back to the car, I heard some odd sounds coming from inside the house.
Worried, I took a quick peek through the window and saw two unfamiliar people moving about inside.
Concerned for her safety, I immediately called the police.
The officers arrived swiftly and approached the house with caution. After a few tense moments, they came out with the two strangers in handcuffs.
My daughter, tears rolling down her cheeks, hurried out and embraced me.
“Dad, I’m so sorry,” she cried. “I didn’t want you to get involved.
Those men broke in right before you arrived. I didn’t know how to handle it, and I was afraid you might get hurt.”
A wave of relief swept over me as I hugged her tightly. “It’s okay, honey. I’m just glad you’re safe.”
After we gave our statements to the officers, who reassured us that the intruders would be dealt with, my daughter and I spent the rest of the day together.
It ended up being the most unforgettable birthday I could have hoped for.
