The White House has put forth a rather questionable justification for the noticeable discoloration spotted on President Donald Trump’s hand earlier this week.

Trump’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, February 24, garnered attention for a variety of reasons. However, in the wake of the event, a conspicuous bruise on the back of the President’s right hand became a hot topic of discussion on social media.

Once a close-up image of the mark surfaced online, speculation ensued. A large number of individuals offered their theories on what might have led to the injury, but the predominant response was one of concern.

The primary inquiry being raised was straightforward: Could this bruise be linked to an undisclosed health condition that Trump is dealing with behind closed doors?

Of course, when it comes to social media discourse, most claims should be taken with a grain of salt unless backed by compelling proof. Thus, those eager for clarity may have felt some sense of reassurance when White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the situation.

However, her response did little to satisfy the masses, with some even accusing her of being dishonest.

Regarding the noticeable mark, Leavitt stated: “President Trump is deeply engaged with the American people, meeting and shaking hands with more individuals daily than any other leader before him.

“His dedication remains steadfast, and he demonstrates that every single day.”

In a subsequent comment, she doubled down on her stance, reiterating: “The President’s bruises are simply a result of his relentless work ethic and continuous handshaking throughout the day.”

Despite this explanation, many social media users remained skeptical, questioning the authenticity of Leavitt’s remarks.

One individual on X (formerly Twitter) bluntly asked: “Why even lie? It’s clearly an IV bruise from a blood test or something. Are people really shocked that Trump, being elderly, has regular doctor visits?”

Another person commented: “The White House claims the oddly concealed bruise on Trump’s right hand is from shaking hands all day. Yeah, not buying it. Do they think we’re that gullible?”

Given Trump’s well-documented history of distorting facts to fit his preferred narrative, it’s hardly surprising that many Americans hesitate to accept his—or his administration’s—words at face value.

That said, there were others online who found the explanation plausible, believing that, at 78 years old, Trump could have sustained such a mark from excessive handshaking alone.

“My husband had a job where he shook hundreds of hands a day—his hands would bruise, too. It’s definitely possible,” one user noted.

Another person weighed in: “Older folks bruise easily, I see this happen to my grandmother all the time. Takes her ages to heal.”

A third individual dismissed the speculation altogether, writing: “He probably just bumped his hand, you idiots! Anyone obsessing over a simple bruise is as ridiculous as I expected. Do none of you ever get bruises?”

Longtime observers may recall that Trump’s medical records became a point of contention last year. In August 2024, he announced he would “happily” disclose his medical history. Yet, by October, he had backtracked, asserting that the public already had ample knowledge about his well-being.

“My medical records? I’ve undergone five examinations in the past four years. You have all the details,” Trump claimed. “I’ve made my health assessments public, and I’ve even taken cognitive tests twice—and passed them with flying colors.”
