Single Mom of Four Buys Used Car, Owner Tells Her to Look In Trunk When She Gets Home
A mother raising four small children on her own decided to purchase a pre-owned vehicle to help her get to her job. The previous owner of the car suggested that she open the trunk once she arrived home. What she discovered inside would change her life forever.
Jennifer found herself alone raising four young kids when her husband, Adam, walked out on her after learning she was expecting their fourth baby. “Another mouth to feed? No chance! I’m done!” he declared one evening before storming out of their mobile home and filing for divorce.
Heartbroken, Jennifer struggled to come to terms with his departure. Although the pregnancy was unplanned, she had assumed Adam would stand by her side through such a difficult period, especially since they were already experiencing financial hardship.
After their separation, Adam stopped contributing any money for their children’s upbringing. He insisted that he was unemployed and that finding work was nearly impossible since he had never completed college.
Shortly after giving birth, Jennifer was left with no alternative but to seek employment. Her savings were dwindling, and she needed money for baby formula, diapers, and groceries. She wandered through rows of restaurants and retail stores, only to face rejection from potential employers who hesitated to hire someone with four small children.
“It’s tough to employ mothers with young kids because emergencies always arise. Either your child falls ill, or you have no one to watch them, meaning you’ll need time off. I’m sorry, but it’s just too much for us to handle,” one business owner candidly told her.
With no opportunities in her local area, Jennifer expanded her job search to a neighboring city. Using the little cash she had left, she took a taxi and asked her neighbors to keep an eye on her kids for the afternoon.
Upon arriving, she noticed a job posting for a housekeeping position at a nearby hotel. She walked in, applied, and was hired on the spot. “We are in dire need of staff, especially with summer approaching. In a few weeks, we’ll be fully booked,” the HR manager informed her.
Desperate to earn a living, Jennifer eagerly accepted the job, even though it required daily travel to another city. She expressed her gratitude to the HR manager before heading home, where she excitedly shared the news with her children.
However, after spending almost $30 on a taxi ride, she quickly realized that commuting every day would drain her finances. Owning a car would be far more economical, but she lacked the funds to purchase one. Her only option was to find an affordable second-hand vehicle.
She came across a car she liked but was unsure if the seller would agree to lower the price. “Would you consider selling this vehicle for $5000?” she asked, explaining her situation. “I’m a single mother raising four kids, and money has been incredibly tight. I need a car to get to work in another city.”
After hearing her story, the seller was moved by her struggle and agreed to reduce the price. “If you can pay by tomorrow, it’s yours for $5000,” he told her.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Jennifer was determined to secure the money. She applied for a bank loan, hoping it would allow her to finalize the purchase. Unfortunately, her poor credit history led to an immediate rejection.
Feeling defeated, she considered her remaining options. Moving to a different city wasn’t feasible since her eldest son, Ethan, had recently started school near their trailer park. Renting a place closer to work was also out of the question due to high costs, and she couldn’t relocate the trailer. A car was essential not just for her job but also for transporting her children to school and daycare.
Then she remembered the family heirloom her late mother had left her—a gold chain that had been passed down for generations. The thought of selling it brought tears to her eyes, but she knew she had no choice.
Taking the necklace from her jewelry box, she whispered, “I’m sorry, Mom. I have to do this.”
She walked to the nearest pawnshop, where the necklace was appraised at $5500. The amount was enough to purchase the car and leave her with some extra cash for daily expenses.
The following day, she returned to the dealership and handed the seller an envelope containing $5000. “Thank you for agreeing to sell this to me, sir. You have no idea how much this means to my family,” she said.
The man, who introduced himself as Jeff, smiled warmly. “Congratulations on your purchase. You made a great choice,” he told her.
While Jennifer completed the necessary paperwork, Jeff discreetly placed something inside the trunk of the car. As she was preparing to drive away, he called out to her.
“By the way, check the trunk when you get home. I left something in there for your children,” he said, waving goodbye as she drove off.
Life quickly became hectic for Jennifer. Between commuting to work and shuttling her kids to school and daycare, she completely forgot about checking the trunk—until she stumbled upon a note in the glove compartment.
“I hope you and your children appreciate the gift I left in the trunk. May it bring you some relief,” the note read.
Curious, Jennifer hurried outside to inspect the trunk. At first, she was puzzled to see only a white envelope in one corner. Then, recognition dawned on her—it was the same envelope she had used to hold the payment for the car.
With trembling hands, she opened it and found the $5000 untouched.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she processed Jeff’s incredible generosity. That evening, after work, she drove straight back to the dealership to express her heartfelt gratitude.
“The world presents us with challenges, and we have the choice to either overcome them or be defeated by them,” Jeff told her. “I admire your strength and determination for your children. I wanted to help in my own way. Just remember to pay it forward when you can.”
