Recently, Ellen DeGeneres disclosed a deeply personal family secret, hoping that her candid revelation might support others enduring similar experiences.
The entertainer admits she wishes she had been safeguarded as a defenseless child and is "enraged at those who refuse to believe."
Rising Star
Hailing from Louisiana, Ellen DeGeneres stepped into the limelight in the late 1970s, overcoming the obstacles that stood in her way.
Her major breakthrough occurred in 1986 when she delivered a stand-up set on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. This performance paved the way for additional late-night television appearances, consecutive club bookings, and acting opportunities in various TV programs.
Between 1989 and 1990, the comedian, now 66, secured her first consistent television role as part of the cast of the short-lived sitcom Open House. By 1994, she headlined the comedy series These Friends of Mine, which was later renamed Ellen.
“I was laughing hysterically when I read the script. I knew exactly how I could bring it to life,” the celebrated awards show host shared with The New York Times in 1994. “I wanted a program that would have everyone talking the next day.”
A Groundbreaking Moment
People certainly did talk—not just the following day, but for years to come. The conversation reached a peak when DeGeneres publicly embraced her identity as a lesbian, both on Ellen and in her personal life.
The series was canceled in 1998, and though the decision was heartbreaking, that same year she confirmed her romantic relationship with actress Anne Heche.
“I saw the most stunning woman I had ever laid eyes on standing across the room. Her name was Ellen DeGeneres. She was glowing,” Heche once reminisced about their first meeting. “I think at certain moments in life, people just radiate a special energy and brilliance. That was her.”
The couple parted ways in 2000, and shortly afterward, Heche publicly shared details about her own painful past.
During a 2001 interview with Barbara Walters, Heche disclosed that she had been a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of her father, beginning when she was merely a toddler.
“He assaulted me,” said the award-winning actress, who tragically lost her life in August 2022 at the age of 53 following a devastating car accident.
“I think it’s always challenging for children to open up about abuse because all they have are their memories. There are no recordings…nothing carved in stone,” the Wag the Dog actress stated. “People can always question, ‘How can you be sure?’ And that doubt is one of the most agonizing aspects. You just know.”
Heche was not alone in facing skepticism after revealing her truth.
‘Anger Toward Skeptics’
“As a survivor of sexual abuse, I am livid at those who dismiss victims and ask, ‘Why can’t you recall the exact date?’” DeGeneres told Today’s Savannah Guthrie in 2018. “That’s not what stays with you. What lingers is what happened, where you were, and how it made you feel. Those are the memories that endure.”
She had previously touched upon her own experience during a conversation with Busy Philipps on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (which aired from 2003 to 2022).
During the episode, Philipps, known for her work in film and television, revealed she had been sexually assaulted at the age of 14.
In response, DeGeneres shared, “I was 15 when something happened to me…Anyone who has endured this kind of trauma gets deeply frustrated when people say, ‘Why did you take so long to speak up?’” She continued, “Because we’re taught to stay silent. As young girls, we’re conditioned to accept it and not cause trouble.”
Initially, DeGeneres—an advocate for both veganism and animal rights—spoke only briefly about her own trauma. However, a year later, she provided a more detailed account of the man responsible.
Speaking Her Truth
During a discussion with David Letterman on his Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, DeGeneres—who has been married to actress Portia de Rossi since 2008—explained that the abuse began when she was around 15 or 16.
At the time, her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy. DeGeneres’ former stepfather exploited this to assault her.
“He told me, while my mom was out of town, that he had detected a lump in her breast and needed to examine mine,” a visibly emotional DeGeneres recounted to Letterman. “He convinced me he had to feel my breasts, and then he attempted to do it again. And again.”
Initially, she remained silent about the repeated assaults, afraid to disclose them to her mother. When she eventually gathered the courage to share her truth, her mother dismissed her claims.
“I should never have tried to shield her. I should have looked after myself,” she admitted about her mother, who continued to stay with the man for another 18 years. “…She didn’t believe me at first. But she eventually left him after he changed his story multiple times.”
Reflecting on the lasting impact of her experiences, DeGeneres—who has continued to support her mother despite everything—acknowledged, “I never fully allowed myself to be affected by it. But recently, I’ve found myself thinking, ‘I wish someone had protected me better. I wish she had believed me.’ She has since apologized, but, you know.”
