Sam Elliott’s real life love story is straight out of a Hollywood movie

Some Hollywood stars capture our interest by leading flashy, extraordinary lives.

Yet, stars like Sam Elliott draw attention for a different reason: they show us that real love still exists.

At 79, Elliott has been happily married to his wife, Katharine Ross, for thirty years.

And they’re still going strong.

Sam Elliott, a favorite among many, has his heart set on just one woman: his wife Katharine Ross, whom he has been with for three decades.

They first met during the filming of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Ross played a major role, while Elliott, as he shared with AARP, “was barely noticeable, just a glorified extra in a bar scene.”

Elliot fell for Ross instantly, but he hesitated to approach her. He saw himself as just an “extra,” while she was a star.

“I could only watch her come and go,” he said, “I never talked to her. I couldn’t even think of speaking to her.”

It’s clear that Elliott was smitten with Ross right away. However, he waited for the perfect moment.

Their paths crossed again on the set of The Legacy in 1978, and that’s when he finally made his move.

They clicked instantly and married six years later. Ross had been married four times before, but this was Elliott’s first marriage.

Despite her many attempts at marriage, Ross might have been unsure about this one. Yet, thirty years later, she knows it was the right choice.

They both strongly support each other’s careers. Elliott almost turned down a major role as Cher’s biker boyfriend in the 1985 film Mask because they were on their honeymoon in Hawaii, as reported by the New York Times.

Elliott told his agent he wouldn’t cut his honeymoon short for a role test. That night, Ross called the agent to ensure her husband would make it back on time.

They have an adult daughter, Cleo Rose, who became quite known as a musician after professional training at Joanne Barron/D.W. Brown Acting Studio.

Sam and Kate’s love and dedication keep them connected every day.

“It’s all about understanding and effort. You work through the tough parts; you don’t just give up. That’s what makes a relationship last,” Elliott explained to AARP Magazine.

So simple, yet so profound.

They split their time between homes in California and Oregon. Elliott hopes to move to “La La Land” in the future.

Elliott and Ross even achieved their dream of acting together as husband and wife. They did this twice: in The Hero and Love Letters, which Elliott says was a career highlight.

So what’s the secret to their success?

“It’s all about shared love and respect,” he notes, adding that Ross is “a very stable woman who has seen it all.”

Persistence is essential: “Like anything, there are good times and bad, but you must keep going.”
