A tourist from Paris was walking the streets of New York when she saw a man taking a partially eaten hamburger from a trash bin. Thinking he was homeless, she decided to help him, not realizing it was Richard Gere.

The upset woman carefully brought the wealthy beggar some new food, saying, “It’s hard to believe something like this could happen.”

In 2014, Richard Gere, along with Kyra Sedgwick and Steve Buscemi, acted in the drama movie Time Out of Mind, which was being shot in New York.

In the movie, Gere, now 74, plays George, a man with mental illness who is kicked out of his apartment and left on the streets.

The director, Oren Moverman, asked the star to “be” homeless for a scene on the first day of shooting. Dressed in shabby clothes, Gere was placed among ordinary people on the busy city sidewalks.

While Gere acted as a needy person, walking the streets of New York with an empty coffee cup asking for money, few noticed he was filming in a major city.

“No one looked at me for the first forty minutes or so I was out there,” Gere said. “I was acting naturally,” he added. “I was in one of New York’s busiest areas. If I were actually Richard Gere, I wouldn’t have lasted thirty seconds.”

He also mentioned that Gere was neither disguised nor without makeup.

“People guessed based on how I acted and where I was that I wasn’t the movie star,” Gere explained. “They filled in the gaps with the wrong story.”

Moverman added, “No one gave him a penny.” Nobody recognized him. This showed the main idea: homeless people are everywhere, even if we don’t see them.

Hidden homeless individuals

Unfortunately, someone photographed him, and after sharing it on social media, rumors spread that the An Officer and a Gentleman actor was going undercover to highlight homelessness. The post even claimed he was giving $100 to every homeless person he saw, which drew over two million views.

Gere, who does not have his own social media accounts, used actress Jenna Malone’s Facebook page to correct the false information.

“Richard Gere here. Hello. I was shocked to find a picture of me as a homeless person on a Facebook fan page last week.”

He continued, saying the message linked to the post was “fictional” and that he was not doing an experiment but filming a movie. He stated he never gave out $100 bills.

Although his cup had no change, one lady noticed him.

Karine Gombeau, her husband Bruno, and their teenage son were leaving a nearby pizza place when the Runaway Bride actor rummaged through a trash can near Grand Central Station and grabbed a half-eaten burger.

The Parisian family saw the older “hobo” with the ruined burger in his hand, wearing a light jacket, loose pants, and a beanie.

She couldn’t tell who was under the dirty clothes.

Disturbed by the sight, 42-year-old Gombeau approached him and gave him some leftovers from the “big” pizza she, her husband, and their 15-year-old son had bought from an Italian restaurant, she told The New York Post.

After taking the food, Gere asked, “What’s in the bag?”

“I tried to talk to him in English, but he spoke some French,” she began. “I apologized, saying, ‘Je suis désolée, but the pizza is cold.’”

“Thank you so much,” the millionaire responded as he took the gift. “God bless you.”

Later, the Parisian tourist expressed her sadness about the many homeless people in the city.

“Knowing they have nothing and we waste food makes me very sad. It moves me.”

Unexpected turn!

Two days later, Gombeau got a copy of the local newspaper from a staff member at her hotel.

When she opened it and saw a picture of herself with the handsome man, she was shocked.

“It was magical… This story is unbelievable,” she said. “I can’t believe something like this happened.”

Even at his age, she thought he was very good-looking. She added, “I really liked Chicago, but Pretty Woman wasn’t my favorite movie.”

In an interview with the newspaper, the woman explained that her family, who were staying in the city for four days, did not realize they had walked onto a movie set.

But there was one clear sign.

People “came out from all around the station,” Gombeau said, and she told her “husband to stop filming” as he was recording memories of Grand Central Station.

People came out of the subways, she added. It was very confusing.

Remember, Gere was acting a role and was not secretly living as a homeless person for an experiment!
