In 2006, the world mourned the loss of Steve Irwin, widely known as “The Crocodile Hunter.” His impact remains strong.
People were shocked by the tragic event, especially considering his age at the time. It happened around 12 years ago.
Terri Irwin spoke about Steve’s death in an interview. On the Australian TV show “Anh’s Brush With Fame,” she shared some touching words.
The 53-year-old widow appeared to promote her work against animal culling, but the topic soon shifted to her late husband.
She told his fans that Steve, her quirky husband, wouldn’t have been surprised.
“He never believed he would live long. He always had a feeling that his life would end soon.”
Sadly, Steve was right. While filming “Ocean’s Deadliest” in Queensland, Australia, a stingray attacked him and pierced his chest with its barb.
After the incident, Terri was told to call her zoo manager. She remembers that moment, saying:
“All I can recall is the crushing pain and the huge sense of responsibility. But what should I do next?
It was really hard to tell Bindi and Robert outside the car, so I had to gather myself before I did.”
Tears filled Terri’s eyes as she talked about their last moment together. He had stayed behind to finish filming while she and their children flew to Tasmania.
“I remember him waving goodbye at the end of the airstrip. That was the last time we saw him.”
“It’s hard every day, and even after 11 years, grief changes from a heavy burden to a constant companion,” she said. “It’s always there, and I never know when it will hit me.”
Terri admits she is still learning to cope with Steve’s death.
She mentioned that even though she misses Steve “all the time,” she feels grateful to live her “happily ever after” with the man who fought for nature.
On September 4, 2006, Steve was 44 years old. He was filming near the Great Barrier Reef, close to Port Douglas, when a stingray fatally struck him in the heart.
Terri believes Steve would have been amazed by the amount of love and support that poured in after his death.
“What would have surprised Steve the most was the wave of love and grief.”
He left behind his wife and their two young children, who still share his passion for nature.
Terri is proud that Steve never let fame affect him, even though he had reason to boast. She adds,
“Steve never knew what ‘famous’ meant. He was never proud or full of himself, and I loved that we gave all our earnings to wildlife protection. That made me proud.”
This may be why he was so admired and why people still talk about him. His devoted wife and children continue to carry on his remarkable legacy.
