Two-time Academy Award recipient Gene Hackman and his spouse, renowned classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were discovered lifeless inside their residence at Santa Fe Summit, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday afternoon.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed their passing, along with their pet dog, emphasizing that there were no signs suggesting any criminal involvement. However, Mendoza refrained from disclosing a specific cause of death or speculating on when exactly the couple might have succumbed.

Hackman and Arakawa had been devoted partners since their marriage in 1991. The acclaimed actor had marked his 95th birthday in late January. However, a rare public appearance last year had left many admirers troubled, as he appeared significantly weakened.

Spanning an extraordinary forty-year career in the film industry, Hackman built an illustrious legacy with a vast collection of outstanding performances. The actor and novelist quietly stepped away from Hollywood in the late 2000s, following hints during a 2004 conversation with Larry King that he had no upcoming projects on the horizon.

Over the course of his cinematic journey, Hackman graced the screen in more than 70 motion pictures, earning numerous accolades. Among these, he secured the prestigious Academy Award for Best Actor for his gripping portrayal in The French Connection and later claimed the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his unforgettable role as Little Bill Daggett in Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven.

In 2009, Hackman revealed that a pivotal moment in his decision to leave acting was a medical evaluation that raised concerns among his doctors.

“The final tipping point was a stress test I underwent in New York,” he explained to Empire. “The physician warned me that my heart wasn’t in the right condition to endure excessive strain.”

Following his retirement from the film industry, Hackman dedicated his time to more peaceful pursuits such as painting, fishing, and writing.

Writing, in particular, became a passion of his. “It’s something I find incredibly calming,” he once remarked. “I don’t see myself as an exceptional writer, but I truly enjoy the process.”

He elaborated on why he found writing preferable to acting: “It’s a craft you can control because you’re alone, working at your own pace, instead of having a large group of people on set, all waiting for you to perform.”

One of his last public appearances took place on January 19, 2003, when he attended the 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Hackman leaves behind three children—Christopher, Elizabeth Jean, and Leslie Anne—whom he shared with his late former wife, Faye Maltese.

The loss of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa marks the end of an era for fans and the entertainment industry alike. Our deepest condolences go out to their family and loved ones as they navigate this difficult time.
