When I arrived at the hospital to bring my wife and newborn twins home, I was devastated to discover Suzie was gone. She had left behind nothing but a mysterious note. While I struggled to care for the babies and uncover the truth, I stumbled upon the unsettling secrets that fractured my family.

The drive to the hospital was filled with excitement. Balloons swayed gently in the passenger seat, and I couldn’t keep the grin off my face. This was the day I would finally bring my daughters home.

I was eager to see Suzie’s expression when she saw the nursery, the dinner I’d prepared, and the photos I’d lovingly arranged on the mantle. She deserved happiness after enduring nine grueling months of discomfort, nausea, and my mother’s relentless advice.

It felt like the culmination of everything I’d ever hoped for.

I cheerfully greeted the nurses at the front desk before hurrying to Suzie’s room. But when I stepped inside, I stopped in my tracks.

My daughters lay peacefully in their bassinets, but Suzie was gone. At first, I assumed she’d stepped out briefly, but then I noticed the note. My hands shook as I tore it open.

“Goodbye. Take care of them. Ask your mother WHY she did this to me.”

My heart sank, and my vision blurred as I read the note again and again. The words remained the same, stark and chilling. A cold dread crept over me, freezing me in place.

What could she mean? Why would she leave? This couldn’t be happening. Suzie had seemed happy—hadn’t she?

A nurse entered with a clipboard, smiling. “Good morning, sir. Here are the discharge papers—”

“Where’s my wife?” I interrupted, my voice sharp with panic.

She hesitated, her smile faltering. “She checked out earlier this morning. She said you were aware.”

“What? Where did she go?” I asked, thrusting the note toward her. “Did she say anything? Was she upset?”

The nurse frowned, visibly uneasy. “She seemed calm, just… quiet. Are you saying you didn’t know?”

I shook my head in disbelief. “She didn’t tell me. She left this note instead.”

I left the hospital in a daze, cradling my daughters and clutching the crumpled note.

Suzie was gone. The woman I had built my life with, my partner and love, had vanished without warning. All I had now were two tiny babies, shattered dreams, and the weight of her haunting words.

When I pulled into the driveway, my mom, Mandy, was waiting on the porch, holding a casserole dish with a bright smile. The rich smell of cheesy potatoes wafted toward me, but it couldn’t calm the storm brewing inside.

“Oh, let me see those precious girls!” she exclaimed, setting the dish aside and hurrying toward me.

I stepped back protectively, shielding the car seat. “Not now, Mom.”

Her smile faltered, confusion clouding her face. “What’s wrong?”

Wordlessly, I thrust the note toward her. “This is what’s wrong! What did you do to Suzie?”

Her expression froze, her fingers trembling as she read the note. Her normally bright eyes widened in shock, and for a moment, she looked ready to collapse.

“Ben, I have no idea what this means,” she said finally, her voice unsteady. “She’s always been so… sensitive. Maybe—”

“Don’t you dare lie to me!” I snapped, my voice bouncing off the walls of the porch. “You’ve always been critical of her. Undermining her at every turn.”

“All I ever wanted was to help!” she cried, her voice cracking with emotion, tears streaming down her face.

I turned away, anger and disbelief twisting in my chest. I couldn’t trust her anymore. Something had happened between her and Suzie, and it had driven my wife away. Now, I was left to deal with the wreckage.

That night, after settling Callie and Jessica into their cribs, I sat alone at the kitchen table with the note in one hand and a glass of whiskey in the other. My mother’s denials echoed in my ears, but I couldn’t push away the question haunting me: What did you do, Mom?

I retraced memories of family events, recalling her subtle, cutting remarks. Suzie had always laughed them off, but now I realized, too late, how deeply they must have hurt her.

Determined to uncover the truth, I began searching through Suzie’s belongings. My sorrow deepened with every discovery. Then, in her jewelry box, I noticed a folded paper tucked beneath the lid.

It was a letter from my mother.

My hands shook as I unfolded it and began to read:

“Suzie, you’ll never be the right match for my son. This pregnancy won’t trap him, no matter what you think. If you care for them, you’ll leave before you destroy their lives.”

I dropped the letter as though it had burned me. The full weight of her betrayal crushed me. This was why Suzie had left. My mother had been cruelly tearing her down in secret, and I’d been blind to it.

Furious, I stormed to the guest room where my mom was staying. I pounded on the door until she opened it, startled.

“How could you do this?” I roared, shoving the letter in her face. “You’ve been sabotaging her for years, haven’t you?”

Her face paled as she read the words. “Ben, please—”

“No, you listen to me,” I interrupted. “Suzie left because of you. You broke her. Now I’m left here trying to pick up the pieces.”

Tears streamed down her face. “I was trying to protect you.”

“Protect me?” I asked bitterly. “She’s the mother of my children. You’ve caused enough damage. Pack your things. Leave.”
