Kate shared a tale where her son didn’t defend her when his wife, Liz, ridiculed her cooking.
Kate loved to cook, but she lost interest after her husband died. However, she always prepared delicious meals for her son, John, especially during Christmas when he visited for his favorite roast dinner.
This year, Liz joined the family Christmas dinner for the first time, after previously spending it at her parents’ house for several years.
Kate started early to prepare the chicken with gravy, sides, and desserts, knowing these were John’s favorites.
While cooking, Liz entered the kitchen, took out her phone, and acted as if something smelled bad, but Kate, sweating heavily, chose to ignore her.
Unfortunately, things got worse when Liz loudly suggested, “Hey, Kate, maybe we should order food. Not everyone likes your cooking. It’s important for everyone to enjoy the food at Christmas!”
Kate was shocked by Liz’s harsh words.
Kate saw John in the doorway, avoiding eye contact with her. She held back tears.
Despite Liz’s comments, the other guests seemed to enjoy the meal. John asked if everyone liked the food.
When John’s uncle was enjoying another serving of roast potatoes, he asked, “Why wouldn’t we enjoy my sister’s food?”
John then explained, “Because Liz said Mom’s cooking would ruin the dinner. She suggested we order something.”
Kate’s brother dismissively said, “Irrelevant!” while enjoying his potatoes and gravy.
John smiled at his mother, and Kate realized he was looking for the right moment to address his wife’s earlier comment.
Embarrassed by the family’s stares, Liz blushed, and Kate felt pity for her since it was her first family Christmas.
Later, while clearing the table, Liz apologized to Kate, admitting she had made a big mistake. She explained she was jealous because John always praised his mother’s cooking.
Trying to lighten the mood, Kate offered to teach Liz how to cook her special dishes, saying, “Liz, a boy’s love for his mother’s cooking is special. I learned everything from my mother.”
“Really?” Liz asked, surprised. “Even after what I said?”
“Yes,” Kate replied.
Kate realized Liz’s rudeness was due to feeling threatened, not malice. She then led Liz to the Christmas tree to give her a present she had chosen for her.
Kate encouraged sharing this story with friends and loved ones on Facebook.
