Julia always wanted to be the Ideal Neighbor. She hoped to inspire other women in her neighborhood by setting an example. Imagine her surprise when her mother arrived on a Harley-Davidson, parking right in the driveway. Julia felt a rush of embarrassment so strong she nearly asked her mother to leave, but the reality stopped her.

As sunlight lit up Julia’s yard, she crouched in the soil, her gloves gently pressing the earth around her blooming roses. The light scent of flowers mixed with the cool breeze, offering her a moment of peace from the stress inside. This was her place of comfort—a spot where things felt manageable.

The voice she had been dreading soon broke the quiet.

“Good morning, Julia!” Nancy’s sugary tone rang out. “Wow, you’re up early and already in the garden? So impressive,” she added, her words dripping with barely hidden condescension.

Julia looked up and forced a polite smile.

Nancy stood there, her floral dress crisp and her hair flawless, like someone plucked from the pages of a glossy magazine instead of a regular street.

“Good morning, Nancy,” Julia replied, keeping her tone calm, though her jaw tightened slightly.

“I try to keep things looking good. Of course, it’s never as perfect as yours.”

Nancy’s smile grew sharper. “Oh, don’t be so hard on yourself. I suppose everyone has their own style. Yours is… well, a little different, isn’t it?”
