Increasing Twin Births: A Rare Occurrence

The likelihood of giving birth to twins has increased by 72% between 1980 and 2018. However, twins remain a rarity, with about 33 out of every 1,000 births being twins. Identical twins are even rarer, with only three to four births out of every 1,000 being identical twins.

A Special Surprise for Savannah Combs

Savannah Combs, a 23-year-old from Middleburg, Florida, was thrilled to learn she was expecting twins. The excitement was coupled with a rare condition: both twins had Down syndrome. This news was emotional for Savannah and her husband, Justin Ackerman. They knew their babies might face judgment due to their condition, but Savannah saw their rarity as something incredibly precious.

Sharing the Journey on Social Media

Savannah shared her pregnancy and post-pregnancy journey on TikTok, quickly gaining a following. In her videos, she revealed the challenges and joys of her unique situation. Despite being advised to abort her babies, Savannah chose to keep them, considering every prenatal appointment a blessing.

Early Arrival and NICU Stay

At 29 weeks pregnant, Savannah was admitted to the hospital and delivered her daughters, Kennadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman, on May 12, 2021. The twins were born two months early and spent several weeks in the NICU. Savannah explained that her twins were “mono di” twins, meaning they had their own sacs but shared the same placenta, making them identical. The combination of being identical twins with Down syndrome is extraordinarily rare, estimated at one in 2 million.

Embracing the Precious Moments

Despite their condition, Savannah emphasized that her daughters are like any other children. They have feelings, a beating heart, and are learning to talk and do things other kids do. Although they may develop a bit slower, Savannah is confident they will reach their milestones. She lovingly shares their progress on TikTok, showing that with determination, they can achieve anything.

Facing Criticism with Grace

Unfortunately, not everyone has been kind. Some individuals have criticized Savannah and her family on social media. In response to a particularly harsh comment suggesting that the babies should be put up for adoption, Savannah had the perfect reply. She shared on Facebook, “Good thing they weren’t born to you and were born to me. God knew what he was doing by giving these babies to the right parents who would love them regardless.”

Celebrating Precious Lives

Savannah’s journey with her daughters, Kennadi and Mckenli, is a testament to the power of love and acceptance. Her story highlights the beauty and uniqueness of her twins, showing that every child, regardless of their condition, deserves to be cherished. The resilience and joy of this family serve as an inspiration to many.
