Donald and Melania Trump rarely display their affection in public. On the evening of the election in November last year, a body language expert suggested that Melania appeared less than pleased about her husband’s victory. Speculation about the strength of their relationship has circulated for years.

However, things seemed different on Inauguration Day. On that Monday, Melania was observed smiling, holding Donald’s hand, and even exchanging cheek kisses. A body language specialist noted a noticeable shift in their dynamic, even though not every moment of the day was entirely positive.

One expert paid close attention to the couple’s dance at the inauguration ball, observing a particular awkwardness in Melania’s demeanor for a specific reason.

Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, like those before it, was a grand affair. Although the cold weather prevented the outdoor swearing-in ceremony, Trump officially took his oath inside the US Capitol Rotunda, surrounded by his family.

The possibility of Melania taking on the role of first lady for a second term had been a topic of conversation for years. When the Trumps initially departed the White House, it was reported that Melania was reluctant to return. Nevertheless, as Donald embarked on another presidential campaign, Melania publicly expressed her willingness to go back to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. However, when her husband’s victory was announced in November, she didn’t seem particularly excited.

While some perceived the couple’s hug and kiss as a touching moment, body language expert Darren Stanton remained unconvinced. He observed Melania’s apparent hesitation to join Donald on stage to celebrate, describing the interaction as lacking closeness.

Stanton pointed out that during the election win celebration, Donald gestured for Melania to come forward for a hug, but her response seemed hesitant. He remarked, “It felt disjointed and awkward, with no real emotion from her. Her smiles didn’t appear genuine; they seemed staged for the occasion.”

Stanton elaborated further: “Given the magnitude of her husband’s win, you’d expect more visible emotion from her. However, her behavior came across as restrained, almost devoid of genuine joy or happiness.”

Despite this, Melania supported her husband during the final rallies before the election. Since November, the couple had been preparing to return to the White House. On January 20, Donald was inaugurated, and the pair’s interactions appeared warmer than ever.

Speaking to the Mirror, body language expert Judi James noted Donald’s frequent hand-holding with Melania throughout the day. She described him as behaving like a chivalrous gentleman, kissing her cheek and gazing at her during their dance with an air of romantic admiration.

Melania’s attire for the day was also notable. According to James, her outfit was carefully chosen to convey a message about her role as First Lady.

James observed, “Her wide-brimmed hat and sharply tailored coat signaled her as an equal partner to Trump, a woman ready to take charge. Her confident smile and concealed eyes added to her composed and regal demeanor.”

During a socially awkward moment, such as bidding farewell to the Bidens after Donald’s speech, Melania’s body language subtly conveyed her feelings. When Biden placed his arm around her, she turned toward her husband, holding onto her hat as a distraction. Later, as Donald shook hands with Biden, Melania placed her arm around Donald’s waist, offering reassurance.

Body language experts also remarked on Melania’s shift in confidence. Judi James noted her poised smile, which reflected a calm and assured presence.

“By the time they left the service, Donald and Melania’s clasped hands became a more pronounced symbol of unity. Trump even lifted their hands as if to display his pride in her and show his care as they navigated the day together,” James explained. Melania’s radiant smile, paired with her concealed eyes, created an aura of elegance and relaxation.

Inbaal Honigman, another body language expert, noted a significant difference in Melania’s approach compared to 2017. This time, she appeared more composed and neutral, opting for understated expressions and gestures to allow the focus to remain on her husband.

Honigman remarked, “Melania’s demeanor was calm and neutral, ensuring she didn’t attract attention away from her husband. Her wide-brimmed hat served as a shield from criticism, allowing her to maintain her neutral expression with ease.”

January 22 marked Donald and Melania’s 20th wedding anniversary. Their lavish wedding took place at Bethesda-by-the-Sea in 2005. Moving back into the White House together seemed like a fitting anniversary gift.

During the inauguration ball, Melania’s interactions continued to spark analysis. Abbie Maroño, a behavioral scientist, noticed moments of discomfort when Donald tried to kiss her, which resulted in an awkward air kiss. Maroño suggested this might have been Melania’s way of shielding herself from the public gaze.

At the Commander-in-Chief Ball, their dance began tensely but became more relaxed as Vice President JD Vance, his wife Usha, and others joined them. As the evening progressed, Melania smiled and appeared to enjoy herself.

In another instance, lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman shared what Melania reportedly whispered to Donald during the Liberty Ball. The exchange highlighted a mix of reassurance and playful dialogue, with Melania expressing her support and Donald responding with a determination to improve.
