Meghan Markle had already made her mark in fashion before she became part of the Royal Family, and she continues to impress us. Honestly, we’d need many hands to count the number of times the Duchess of Sussex has amazed us with her stunning style, which blends elegance with a touch of flair.
Yet, Meghan has chosen outfits that have shocked the royal circle, and her recent visit to Colombia with Prince Harry is a prime example.
On August 15, 2024, Markle and Harry started their trip in Colombia at the invitation of Vice President Francia Márquez. People magazine reports that the duo aims to boost their Archewell Foundation and champion causes like women’s empowerment.
No doubt, Meghan’s outfits made an impact, but one ensemble was particularly striking. At one event, she sported a navy blue Veronica Beard suit with a halter top and fitted pants. She accessorized with simple earrings, a tennis bracelet, and the famous Cartier Love bangle. Elegant? Definitely. Controversial? For sure!
Some harsh critics — or should we call them fashion police? — argued that her outfit was too bold and not suitable for such a formal occasion. “Showing off those big shoulders again, soon it’ll be the huge back. Same old style,” commented a user on X. Naturally, no Meghan moment is complete without comparisons to Princess Diana, with accusations of her trying to mimic her late mother-in-law.
Just like the backlash Meghan faced for her supposedly inappropriate attire during a visit to Nigeria, her critics in Colombia were vocal. The suit that showcased her shoulders? They called it the biggest fashion faux pas ever. Moreover, some said she was blatantly imitating Princess Diana’s style.
“One critic said, ‘Meghan Markle’s sad attempt to mimic Princess Diana is just a pitiful farce that shows her obsession with a legacy she cannot match. It’s not a tribute; it’s a desperate grab for attention,’ while another added, ‘She can try all she wants, she’ll never match Diana. Diana had a genuine charm; she owned her outfits, they didn’t own her. With Meghan, it’s the other way around; the outfits just don’t suit her well.’”
But let’s cut the duchess some slack. She has never said she was trying to be like Princess Diana, although some of her outfits might remind us of the late royal’s iconic looks. And if she were trying to emulate Diana, Princess Diana probably wouldn’t have minded.
Harry recently said to the BBC, reflecting on what his mother and Meghan would have been like together, “They’d be incredibly close, no doubt. I believe she’d be ecstatic for me,” he shared with E! News (via Twitter). “She would have loved Meghan — they’d be like best friends.”
