Dame Maggie Smith, famous for playing Professor McGonagall in *Harry Potter* and Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess in *Downton Abbey*, has died at 89, her family confirmed.
In a joint statement, her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin said, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dame Maggie Smith.”
They continued, “She passed away peacefully in a hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. She was a very private person, surrounded by family and friends in her final moments.
She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren who are heartbroken by the loss of such an amazing mother and grandmother.”
The family also expressed gratitude to the hospital staff, saying, “We want to thank the wonderful staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unwavering kindness during her last days.”
The statement ended with a request for privacy, saying, “We appreciate all the kind messages and support and kindly ask for privacy at this difficult time.”
Her death came as a shock to many. The last time she was seen in public was at the Wimbledon men’s singles finals last year.
She looked elegant, wearing a navy blue shirt dress with a chic dotted pattern. She completed the outfit with black leather heels, a blue overcoat, and a matching navy leather bag on her shoulder.
Her bob haircut was styled in soft waves, and she wore pink lipstick to finish her look.
Since the actress rarely made public appearances, fans were surprised to see her at the event.
When photos of her were shared online, people were delighted. One person commented, “So elegant!” Another wrote, “You look so beautiful,” while someone simply added, “Amazing.”
It was clear her fans were thrilled to see her looking well!
