The day of my wedding was supposed to be etched in my memory for all the right reasons. Instead, it became unforgettable for reasons I could never have anticipated. The nightmare began when my sister decided to bring a lie detector test to the ceremony.

I’m Harlene, a 28-year-old educator, and until recently, I believed my life was picture-perfect. My fiancé, Mark, and I had spent five blissful years together, imagining a future filled with love and laughter. That vision was shattered the moment my sister, Melissa, turned our wedding into a catastrophe.

Mark and I had first crossed paths five years ago through a mutual friend. From the start, it felt like we had known each other forever.

He was warm-hearted and thoughtful, always mindful of the people around him. What drew me to him most was his deep respect for others and his readiness to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

We quickly became inseparable. Our weekends were spent discovering new eateries, binge-watching sitcoms, and dreaming of what our lives could be. “Har,” he’d tease, flashing his trademark grin, “if it weren’t for your cooking, I’d probably starve.”

“Well, good thing I love feeding you,” I’d laugh as he devoured another plate of lasagna.

Mark was a dedicated software developer, often working long hours at his desk. I didn’t mind; I admired his passion for his work and the effort he poured into his career.

As for me, I was living my dream as a teacher. My students were my daily rays of sunshine, and I cherished every chaotic yet beautiful moment of my job.

When we decided to tie the knot, we envisioned a wedding that celebrated love and joy. We wanted our guests to share in the happiness we felt.

“Let’s make this a wedding people will remember for years,” Mark said one evening as we brainstormed ideas.

“Absolutely,” I replied. “How about incorporating games that get everyone involved?”

“That’s perfect,” he said, his eyes lighting up with excitement. “We could do trivia, charades, or even a karaoke battle.”

We even sought input from Melissa, though she seemed disinterested. “I don’t know,” she said with a shrug. “You two are the creative ones. Just tell me what you need, and I’ll help.”

Despite Melissa’s tepid involvement, Mark and I pressed on, crafting our dream wedding. Every detail mattered to us, from the playlist to the floral arrangements.

Mark was meticulous, ensuring everything was just right—from the napkins complementing the centerpieces to the flawless design of the cake.

“This will be the happiest day of our lives,” I said as we finalized the guest list.

“It will be,” Mark replied, squeezing my hand. “I can’t wait to see you walk down the aisle.”

I believed him. I believed in us. We were a team, and I thought nothing could disrupt our happiness.

But the day we had so carefully planned turned out to be something I wished I could erase from memory.

On the wedding day, I was filled with anticipation.

As I stood in front of the mirror, I couldn’t help but smile. This was the moment I had dreamed about for so long.

The venue buzzed with energy, the atmosphere vibrant and filled with laughter as our loved ones celebrated alongside us.

Mark greeted me with a kiss on the cheek. “You look absolutely stunning, Har,” he said, his voice filled with admiration.

“And you look so handsome,” I replied, taking in his crisp suit and the sparkle in his eyes.

Everything felt perfect until Melissa grabbed the microphone.

“Alright, everyone!” she announced, her voice commanding attention. “I have a surprise for the happy couple! I’ve been planning this for weeks, and I promise it’s going to be so much fun!”

I froze, my eyes wide with confusion. I hadn’t heard anything about a surprise.

“What’s going on, Melissa?” I asked, approaching her.

“You’ll see!” she replied with a mischievous grin. A man wheeled in a small machine with wires and sensors.

“What’s that?” I asked, bewildered.

“It’s a lie detector!” Melissa declared, beaming. “I thought it would be a hilarious wedding game. You and Mark can answer some fun questions while hooked up to it. Trust me, everyone will love it.”

I glanced at Mark, who seemed uncertain but shrugged.

“Why not?” he said. “Let’s entertain them.”

“That’s the spirit!” Melissa exclaimed, clapping her hands. “Let’s get started.”

As the technician hooked us up to the machine, Melissa began with lighthearted questions.

“Mark,” she asked with a smirk, “did you ever eat the last slice of pizza and blame it on Harlene?”

He laughed. “Yes,” he admitted, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Next, it was my turn.

“Harlene,” Melissa teased, “have you ever secretly binge-watched a show without Mark?”

“Guilty,” I admitted, grinning as the detector confirmed I was telling the truth.

The questions continued, each one more playful than the last, eliciting laughs and cheers from our guests. It seemed like this unexpected twist might be a highlight of the day.

But then Uncle Sam stepped forward, his typically jovial face somber.

“My turn,” he said, his voice serious. “Mark, have you ever cheated on my niece?”

My stomach dropped, and the room fell silent.

Mark chuckled nervously. “That’s absurd, Uncle Sam. I don’t think that question deserves an answer.”

Uncle Sam wasn’t swayed. “If it’s ridiculous, then prove it. Answer.”

The look on Mark’s face turned defensive, and I felt unease creeping in.

“Mark,” I said softly, “just answer so we can move on.”

He hesitated before finally responding. “No, I haven’t cheated on Harlene.”

The machine beeped, and the words Lie detected appeared on the screen.

Gasps filled the room as I froze in disbelief.

Uncle Sam pressed on. “Mark, did you cheat on her with someone here today?”

Mark’s silence spoke volumes. Then, I noticed Melissa shifting uncomfortably.

“Was it her?” I asked, pointing at Melissa. “Did you cheat on me with my sister?”

Mark’s silence gave the answer, and when he finally spoke, his single word shattered my world.

“Yes.”

The truth hit like a tidal wave, leaving me breathless. My perfect day had unraveled into a nightmare. Without another word, I walked away, leaving behind the man and the sister who betrayed me and the wedding I would never forget.
