Inside the hectic life of Australia’s biggest family

When Jeni first encountered her future husband, Ray, she was completely certain about one thing—having children was not in her plans.

"Ray had dreams of having at least four kids. To me, that seemed absurd. I remember thinking, ‘Who in the world has that many children?’” Jeni recalled in an interview with Mamamia.

Now, more than 30 years down the line, they find themselves as the proud parents of a staggering 16 children.

A Household Unlike Any Other

For those familiar with Australia, the Bonell family might be a recognizable name. But for others, discovering their story for the first time can be quite astonishing.

Residing in Toowoomba, Queensland, Jeni and Ray lead a life that is anything but typical. Raising such a large family requires them to excel at organization, planning, and multitasking—all while maintaining a good sense of humor.

The Bonell household consists of nine sons and seven daughters: Jesse (35), Brooke (34), Claire (31), Natalie (30), Karl (28), Samuel (26), Cameron (25), Sabrina (24), Tim (22), Brandon (20), Eve (19), Nate (17), Rachel (16), Eric (15), Damian (14), and the youngest, Katelyn (10).

The Reality of Raising 16 Kids

Comedian Jim Gaffigan once joked, “You know what it’s like having a fourth kid? Imagine you’re drowning, then someone hands you a baby.” If four kids seem overwhelming, one can only imagine what raising sixteen must be like.

Managing the family’s grocery shopping alone is an incredible feat. Jeni estimates they spend approximately $600 each week just to stock their pantry. And with inflation causing prices to rise, that number has recently increased by an additional $50. With eight of their children still residing at home, ensuring that everyone is well-fed is a challenge they navigate daily.

Their weekly grocery list is nothing short of impressive. It includes 17 three-liter bottles of milk, 14 boxes of cereal, 45 tubs of yogurt, and a staggering four dozen eggs.

"We go through 50 liters of milk every single week, and on a daily basis, we consume at least one or two loaves of bread," Jeni shared.

Capturing the Chaos

For many families, snapping a nice group photo can be tricky, but for the Bonells, it’s an entirely different level of difficulty.

"Trying to get a perfect family picture is nearly impossible," Jeni admitted with a chuckle. "You need a camera with a wide lens, and no matter how hard we try, there’s always someone looking in the wrong direction, making a goofy expression, or blinking. But honestly, that’s what makes the photos special. They capture who we really are."

Raising 16 children means far more than just dealing with photo mishaps; it involves an intricate balancing act of daily responsibilities and commitments.

The Demands of a Busy Household

Imagine juggling full-time work, multiple part-time jobs, and maintaining a household—all while raising 16 children. That’s the daily reality for Jeni and Ray.

"Back when they were little, I thought life was busy," Jeni reflected. "But in many ways, I’m even busier now with them growing up."

Coordinating multiple school schedules, after-school sports, part-time jobs, and higher education is no small feat. However, Jeni embraces the chaos. "Life is incredibly fast-paced, but it’s fulfilling," she said.

Evenings in the Bonell home reflect the family’s dynamic. "Take the schedule of an average household and multiply it by eight—that’s how our nights play out," Jeni joked.

Some nights are sheer madness, while others run smoothly, like a well-rehearsed routine. But no matter how hectic the day has been, dinner is a constant. "Dinner is something we never miss," Jeni emphasized. "On some nights, there are eight of us at the table; other times, we host more than 20 people!"

Making Every Dollar Count

With such a large family, budgeting is crucial. Jeni has mastered the art of preparing meals that range from just $2 to $10 per serving. She often shares her grocery hauls and money-saving strategies on YouTube, offering guidance to families looking to cut costs.

"Right now, financial strain is something a lot of people are dealing with," she observed. "We all feel the pressure when it comes to budgeting."

To keep things running efficiently, the Bonells use a chore chart, ensuring that everyone aged eight and above contributes to household duties. Additionally, all their children are introduced to cooking early on.

"By the time our kids are 12, they can prepare a roast dinner for 20 people with minimal supervision," Jeni said with pride.

The laundry load is another colossal task. Jeni handles three full loads daily, which amounts to roughly six loads for a typical family. Even grocery shopping requires assistance. "I always need one of the kids to help with the shopping carts," she explained.

Faith and Criticism

Financially, the Bonells manage their household through diligent planning. While they continue making mortgage payments, they acknowledge that raising a large family comes with significant costs.

"We definitely have to make sacrifices," Jeni admitted. "But we all work hard, and we’re not reliant on taxpayer support. Still, we face a lot of criticism for having so many children."

Despite their strong religious beliefs and regular church attendance, Jeni is quick to clarify that their large family wasn’t solely motivated by faith.

"God has a great sense of humor," Jeni quipped. Nonetheless, they have no regrets. "This lifestyle feels natural for us," Ray, who works as an electrician, added. "Everyone needs to do what’s right for them. Sixteen kids isn’t for everyone, but it suits us."

Cherishing Time Together

Despite their jam-packed schedules, Jeni and Ray make sure to carve out moments for themselves.

"Do we find time for just the two of us? Absolutely," Ray said with a grin. "Prioritizing each other is essential."

With two of their oldest children now married and out of the house, Jeni and Ray have also stepped into the role of grandparents, welcoming two grandchildren into their ever-growing family.

Creating an Efficient System

To maintain order, the Bonells have implemented a structured system that ensures everything runs smoothly. Preparing school uniforms and lunches the night before, maintaining a strict chore rotation, and assigning age-appropriate responsibilities all contribute to their efficiency.

"Once a child turns eight, they officially join our roster system," Jeni explained. "They rotate through tasks like sweeping, mopping, setting the table, and assisting with meal prep."

Jeni also shares her favorite snack recipes on YouTube, including air fryer egg cups and air fryer pizza bites—easy, freezable options perfect for school lunches.

At the heart of it all, their family thrives on teamwork, love, and an undeniable sense of humor.

Whether it’s finding creative ways to stretch their grocery budget, tackling mountains of laundry, or simply reveling in the joyous chaos, the Bonells make it work. And they do so with unwavering smiles.
