Megan’s date with Julian started off with promise but quickly spiraled into a total catastrophe.
What should have been a straightforward evening out turned into a nightmare at an upscale restaurant when Julian’s card was declined, and the manager threatened to call the authorities.
It all began when Megan’s older brother, Ryan, took it upon himself to play matchmaker once again.
“You really need to meet this guy, Meg,” Ryan said, sprawled out on the couch, flipping through channels. “His name’s Julian.
He works with me—great guy, solid career, nice car. He’s got everything.”
Megan barely glanced up from her tablet. “Who’s Julian again?”
“Julian,” Ryan repeated, sounding a little irritated. “Trust me, you’ll like him. He’s different.”
“Another one of your setups?” Megan raised an eyebrow.
“This time’s legit,” Ryan insisted. “He’s been asking about you. I think you guys will hit it off.”
With a sigh, Megan replied, “Fine. But if this ends up being another train wreck, I’m done taking your advice.”
Ryan grinned. “You’ll thank me later. Just wait.”
After what felt like hours of getting ready, Megan’s apartment looked like a disaster zone. But her brother’s confidence made her feel like giving it a chance.
Julian pulled up in a sleek, new car that smelled of polished leather. Megan slid into the passenger seat, doing her best to push aside her jitters as the engine purred smoothly.
“Hey, Megan,” Julian greeted her with a warm smile. “Nice to finally meet you.”
“Nice to meet you too, Julian,” Megan replied, trying to match his enthusiasm.
“I’ve made a reservation at this new spot downtown,” Julian said, brimming with confidence. “It’s a little fancy, but the food’s fantastic.”
“Sounds good,” Megan said, masking her surprise at the high-end choice.
The restaurant was a picture of luxury, complete with dazzling chandeliers and pristine table settings.
Megan couldn’t help but feel a bit out of place, but Julian seemed entirely in his element. He led her to their table with an air of assurance.
“Order anything you like,” Julian said, dismissing her hesitation over the costly menu.
“Thanks,” Megan said, feeling a bit relieved. The evening started off well—Julian was charming, and Megan found herself laughing more than she had in weeks.
Then came the bill.
Julian confidently handed his credit card to the server, but moments later, she returned, looking uncomfortable. “I’m sorry, sir, but your card was declined.”
“That can’t be right,” Julian said, his face flushing. “Run it again.”
Declined. Again. And again. Julian’s once calm demeanor morphed into frustration. “This is ridiculous.
Are you sure you’re using the machine correctly?” he snapped.
People at nearby tables started glancing their way, and Megan felt her face grow hot with embarrassment.
“Maybe it’s just an issue with the card. Do you have a backup?” she asked, trying to diffuse the situation.
Julian’s frustration quickly turned to anger. “You think I planned this? Just cover the bill, Megan.”
“I told you I can’t afford a place like this,” Megan shot back, her voice firm. “This was your idea, not mine. Ryan said you were well-off.”
The tension escalated as the restaurant manager approached with a stern expression.
“If this isn’t resolved soon, we may need to involve the authorities,” he warned.
Excusing herself to the restroom, Megan needed a moment to compose herself. As she splashed cold water on her face, her phone buzzed with a text from Ryan: “So, how’s it going?”
Megan stared at the screen, fuming. She tried to calm down before rejoining the table.
When she returned, Julian was still arguing with the server and the manager, and now a security guard had joined them, threatening to call the police if the bill wasn’t settled.
Julian turned to Megan, desperation in his eyes. “Can you just help out this once?”
“I can’t. I don’t have that kind of money,” Megan said, feeling cornered.
Her phone buzzed again. Another message from Ryan: “How’s the date going? ;)”
Megan showed the text to Julian. “Did Ryan know you couldn’t pay?”
Julian looked confused. “I’m not sure. Ryan said he’d transfer some money to my account, but it looks like he didn’t.”
Megan sighed and addressed the security guard. “Can we step outside for a moment? I’ll make a call to sort this out.”
Out in the cool night air, tension still lingered. The security guard kept a close eye on them as Megan dialed her brother, her frustration barely contained.
“Ryan, Julian can’t cover the bill. It’s massive! What were you thinking?”
Ryan’s voice was lighthearted. “Relax, Meg. I thought it’d add some excitement. Just use your card if you have to.”
“You’re joking, right? Get down here and fix this. Now.”
“Alright, alright. I’m coming,” Ryan said, still sounding amused.
When Ryan finally arrived, a grin spread across his face. “So, what’s the issue with the bill?” he asked.
“This isn’t funny, Ryan. You’ve embarrassed me,” Megan snapped.
Ryan just shrugged. “It was supposed to be fun. I’ll take care of it. No need to freak out.”
Moments later, Ryan returned with the receipt in hand. “All settled. Happy now?” he asked, still grinning.
Megan’s eyes flashed with anger. “You think this is funny? You went way too far.”
Ryan remained unfazed. “Come on, Meg. It was just a little prank to spice things up.”
Julian looked at Megan, then at Ryan. “I had no idea. I’m really sorry.”
“It’s not on you,” Megan said, her gaze fixed firmly on her brother.
Ryan, still grinning, gave her a playful nudge. “Lighten up, Megan. It wasn’t that bad.”
Shaking her head, Megan replied in frustration, “You just don’t get it, Ryan. You crossed the line.”
As Ryan strolled off, Megan turned back to Julian. “I’m really sorry about tonight. I had no clue it’d go like this.”
“It’s alright,” Julian said quietly. “I understand.”
They shared a brief moment of mutual understanding before parting ways. Megan walked home, feeling betrayed by her brother and vowing to set firmer boundaries in the future.
