Marriage marks the beginning of a shared journey, and everyone dreams of a flawless wedding day. Daniel’s bride had meticulously planned their wedding night to be a memorable surprise for him. However, events took an unforeseen turn, leaving Daniel deeply hurt and leading him to seek our advice.
Here is Daniel’s letter:
Upon arriving at our hotel room for our first night as husband and wife, Jane, my spouse, softly murmured, “Close your eyes, I have a surprise that will make this night unforgettable.” I complied, and suddenly, there were three knocks on the door.
When I opened my eyes, I was startled to see my mother standing there. I exclaimed, “What is this woman doing here, Jane?”
For some context, my mother abandoned my father and me when I was 12 because she found a wealthy man who could provide for her better.
She didn’t reach out for over twenty years. Recently, upon learning that I’ve achieved financial success, she has been attempting to reconnect. I told her I never wanted to see her again. Jane is fully aware of this history.
Seeing my mother on my wedding night enraged me. Jane said that since we are starting a new life together, I should let go of all my painful memories. I told her that this was a cruel surprise and that I can’t simply erase my past.
I added that I cannot and will not spend my life with a woman who disregards my feelings, and I walked out.
I am still furious to this day. Am I overreacting?
Yours, Daniel
