Weddings are usually full of joy, but as Shanize walked toward the altar, I felt something strange. Something was very wrong, and I couldn’t ignore it. When I finally decided to act, what I found shocked me.

I’ve known Dave for over 30 years. We grew up together, shared secrets, and went through awkward teenage phases. When he told me he was marrying Shanize, a graceful woman he met a year ago, I was thrilled for him. Dave, who I thought would never settle down, had finally found someone to spend his life with.

The wedding seemed perfect. Shanize looked gorgeous, like she came straight out of a bridal magazine, her long white dress flowing as she walked down the aisle. But something felt off. At first, I thought it was just wedding nerves—after all, weddings can be stressful. But as Shanize took another step, I noticed something odd.

Her walk seemed strange, hesitant, like she was struggling. I whispered to Dave’s sister, Heather, “Do you see that? Her walk… it’s weird.” Heather looked down the aisle and shrugged. “You’re overthinking it, Janice. She’s just nervous. It’s a big day.” She smiled, trying to calm me, but I still felt uneasy.

As Shanize got closer, her steps seemed more forced, and her dress moved in a way that wasn’t natural. I couldn’t ignore it anymore. Despite Heather telling me not to cause a scene, I had to know what was going on. When Shanize reached the altar, I couldn’t resist. My heart pounded as I bent down and gently lifted the bottom of her dress.

What I saw underneath left me frozen—large, polished men’s shoes. My mind raced, trying to understand. Then I looked up and noticed something else—men’s suit pants hidden under the dress. That’s when I realized. This wasn’t Shanize. I stared at the person standing before me, and it hit me—it was a man wearing a wig and a veil.

Panic hit me as I locked eyes with Dave, who went from happy to confused. “Janice?” Dave’s voice shook, his joy fading. “What’s going on?” The whole room was silent. The man in the dress didn’t seem bothered. Slowly, he took off the wig and veil, showing his short, dark hair. The room erupted in whispers of shock.

With a smug smile, the man said, “Surprise. You didn’t even notice, did you?” Dave, now clearly shaken, looked around in disbelief. “Where’s Shanize?” he asked, his voice unsteady. The man, who we realized was Dave’s best man, answered casually, “She’s gone. She left days ago, but don’t worry, she asked me to do this. She wanted you to have this moment.”

The whispers grew louder as confusion spread through the room. I stood there, stunned, trying to process what I was hearing. How could Dave’s best man be part of such a bizarre situation? Dave, on the edge of panic, stammered, “What are you talking about? What did you do to her?”

The best man raised his hand, signaling for calm, but his words were far from comforting. “Oh, she’s fine. She just wanted you to know what it’s like to be caught off guard.” Dave’s confusion grew as he shook his head. “What do you mean?”

The best man’s grin widened. “She found out, Dave. About you and Vanessa.” The room went silent again as the weight of his words sank in. Dave stood frozen, horror on his face. “No… that’s not true.” But the best man kept going, his voice full of spite. “Oh, it is. She found out about your affair with Vanessa, one of her bridesmaids, a few days ago.

She could have called off the wedding, but where’s the fun in that? She wanted everyone to see the real you.”

Gasps filled the room. I looked at Vanessa, who was pale and shaking a few rows back, staring at the floor. Dave’s face turned white as he shook his head frantically. “No, no, this can’t be real.” The best man’s voice rose with bitter satisfaction. “It is real, Dave. You cheated on her, and now you’re paying for it.”

Chaos broke out as guests started talking, trying to make sense of what just happened. Dave, desperate, turned to me. “Janice, please. This isn’t what it looks like.” I could only look back at him, my heart sinking. “Dave… what did you do?”

And with that, the best man walked away, leaving Dave standing there, his world falling apart.
