I was absolutely sure my husband was being unfaithful. The stolen looks, the whispered words, the way conversations would abruptly stop the moment I stepped into the room—it all hinted at one thing. But when I finally made up my mind to catch him red-handed, what I discovered left me in shock.

Returning to my job after maternity leave was a challenge. Balancing pressing deadlines with sleepless nights had drained every bit of my energy. So, when my closest friend suggested Lucy—a gentle, soft-spoken nanny with glowing recommendations—I thought I had found the perfect solution.

Initially, she was wonderful. My children adored her, the house once again carried the comforting scent of homemade meals, and even my husband, Peter, appeared more at ease. He started arriving home earlier, smiling more, and for the first time in months, our dinner table was filled with laughter.

But soon—something changed.

Every time I entered the house, conversations would abruptly end. My children, who were usually excited to greet me, would suddenly recall “assignments” they needed to finish. Peter would find a reason to leave—either to take a shower or make a call. And Lucy? She avoided meeting my eyes entirely, hurrying away as if she had been caught in the middle of something secretive.

I reassured myself that I was overthinking. I was exhausted, swamped with work—perhaps even feeling insecure. But then, I saw it.

Peter, standing at the kitchen counter, laughing. His eyes crinkled at the corners, his voice low and affectionate. I hadn’t seen that expression in years.

Then Lucy tilted her head, curling a strand of her hair around her finger. And Peter… oh no.

He smiled at her. Not just a polite grin. It was the kind of smile that used to belong to me.

My stomach clenched.

He’s having an affair.

The late hours. The sudden shifts in his routine. The way he barely noticed me anymore. It all fit together.

Today marks our fifteenth wedding anniversary. No flowers, no presents—just a vague excuse about a “new project.”

I couldn’t pretend anymore.

So, I left work two hours earlier than usual.

My fingers gripped my keys so tightly they dug into my skin. My heart pounded as I stepped into the house, prepared to catch them in the act. But as soon as I crossed the doorway, I froze.

The living room was glowing with the soft light of candles and fairy lights. A beautiful banner stretched across the wall—Happy Anniversary, My Love.

The dining table was set for two, adorned with a stunning bouquet, elegant dishes, and a carefully prepared meal. The rich aroma of garlic and rosemary filled the air. My breath caught in my throat.

What is happening?

Lucy beamed as she approached, wiping her hands on her apron. “Happy anniversary! They worked so hard for you.”

I blinked, trying to make sense of her words. “What?”

Peter emerged from the kitchen, his sleeves rolled up, a towel resting over his shoulder. “Surprise!” He gave me a sheepish grin. “You weren’t supposed to be home yet.”

I stared at him, still expecting some cruel revelation.

Ava tugged at my sleeve. “Mommy, we made dinner for you!”

My son, Ethan, nodded with pride. “Lucy taught us. Daddy wanted to surprise you since you’ve been working so much.”

I felt the air leave my lungs. I turned to Peter. “You… what?”

He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah. I know I’ve seemed distant lately, but it was all for this. Lucy has been helping us plan for weeks. I just wanted to do something special for you this time.”

For a whole month… they had been secretly learning how to cook.

A lump formed in my throat. I had spent weeks convinced Peter was betraying me when in reality, he had been preparing this?

Tears stung my eyes. “I—I don’t know what to say.”

Lucy smiled kindly. “Say yes to dinner.” Then she clapped her hands together. “And with that, I’m taking the kids to the mall. We’re going to wander around, play, and have fun. We’ll leave you two alone.”

She winked at me, grabbed the children’s jackets, and within moments, they were gone.

Now, it was just Peter and me.

He stepped closer. “So… do you like it?”

I swallowed hard, emotions flooding through me. I had spent the last month preparing for heartache. But instead, I got this.

And yet, for some reason, I still couldn’t shake the unease clinging to my chest.

For the first time in weeks, I let out a breath. The worry, the doubt, the nagging suspicion that had been eating at me—it all disappeared.

I had been completely, utterly wrong.

No one was pushing me away. The kids weren’t growing distant. Peter wasn’t cheating. It had all been in my head. And now, as I stood in the middle of our candlelit dining room, wrapped in the scent of a lovingly prepared meal, I felt something I hadn’t in a long time.

I was happy.

Peter came closer, his gaze filled with something that made my heart ache. Love. Pure, undeniable love. He extended a bouquet of red roses—my favorite.

“Happy anniversary, sweetheart,” he murmured, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

I smiled, blinking away the tears pooling in my eyes. “You didn’t have to do all this.”

“Yes, I did,” he whispered. “You do everything for our family. You care for the kids, manage the house, support me—I wanted to do something for you this time.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black box. My breath hitched as he opened it, revealing a stunning pair of designer heels. The exact ones I had admired months ago but never bought because I felt guilty spending so much on myself.

My lips parted in disbelief. “Peter…”

“I saw you looking at them,” he said with a smirk. “I thought you should have them.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “You’re unbelievable.”

His expression turned serious as he reached for my hand. “And there’s one more thing.”

I tilted my head. “What is it?”

He took a steady breath, meeting my gaze. “I want to say my vows to you again.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Peter—”

“I know this is unexpected,” he interrupted, squeezing my hand. “But I mean it. After fifteen years, after everything we’ve been through, I still choose you. Every single day, I choose you.”

Tears blurred my vision.

He held both my hands and began.

“This time, my vows are different,” he said softly. “But the meaning is unchanged. I promise to love you, to stand beside you, to fight for us no matter what. To be the husband you deserve.”

A tear slipped down my cheek. I wiped it away, laughing shakily. “I don’t even know what to say.”

“Say you’ll put up with me for another fifteen years.”

I giggled. “I think I can handle that.”

He leaned in, his lips just inches from mine. My body softened, my heart swelling with so much love it nearly overflowed.

And then—his phone buzzed.

Peter stiffened.

I pulled back slightly. “Aren’t you going to check that?”

His jaw clenched. “It’s nothing.”

I frowned. “Peter—”

With a sigh, he pulled out his phone. The screen lit up, and I saw the name before he could flip it over.

Lucy.

I blinked. Then laughed. “Oh no, is she struggling with the kids?”

Peter smirked. “Probably.”

And for the first time in weeks, I felt at peace.

I was exactly where I belonged.
