Michael Jordan honored basketball legend Jerry West during an appearance on First Take. Earlier today, it was revealed that the iconic figure depicted on the NBA logo passed away at the age of 86, with his wife by his side. Countless tributes poured in for West, who was a remarkable figure both on and off the court.

Additionally, First Take shared on X that Jordan, now 61, sent a text message to Stephen A. Smith during the live broadcast to express his thoughts. Jordan wrote, “He was a trusted friend and mentor—almost like an older brother. I truly cherished his support and wisdom. While I often dreamed of playing against him, the more I learned about him, the more I wished we could’ve been teammates.

“His basketball intellect was unmatched, and the way we approached the game was so similar. His wife, Karen, and his son will always feel the void of his absence. My deepest sympathies to his family. Rest peacefully, Logo.”

Reacting to a clip of Jordan’s tribute, a fan commented, “Wow, that’s incredibly kind of MJ.” Another person added, “Jerry West was, in my view, the greatest general manager in the history of the game. Without question, the GOAT GM. Rest in peace, Jerry ‘The Logo’ West.” A third noted, “He’ll be missed,” while another praised, “Jerry West—pure class! Rest easy, legend.”

Stephen A. Smith, 56, also shared a personal memory of West. Recalling a time when West had been watching his show, Smith mentioned that he had once suggested Michael Jordan replace West as the NBA’s logo. To Smith’s surprise, West called him and agreed with the idea.

Smith recounted, “He reached out, and I thought he was going to argue against it, but he told me, ‘Absolutely not. Jordan is my favorite athlete, and he deserves it.’”

As one of the greatest players in NBA history, West not only left an incredible legacy on the court but also played a crucial role in constructing the Los Angeles Lakers’ dynasty of the 1980s.

At the time of his passing, West was serving as a consultant for the Los Angeles Clippers. His contributions to basketball were recognized over the years, including a statue from the Lakers in 2010 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.
