As Kim neared her 29th birthday, she imagined a simple, cozy party with her closest friends and family. Her husband, Tom, took charge of the planning, assuring her that everything was handled and the night would be special. However, he made one important decision—he let his mom, Linda, handle the cake.

On the day of the party, everything seemed perfect. There was laughter, wine, and the warmth of loved ones. Even Linda, who often annoyed Kim, was bearable, though she showed up overdressed as usual. Kim had invited Rob, a kind coworker who looked after everyone in the office. Secretly, she hoped that Rob and Linda might connect, giving Linda a new focus and less time to interfere in her marriage with Tom.

Rob was charming that night, making Linda laugh. For a moment, Kim thought her plan might work. Linda appeared interested in Rob, and Kim hoped this would keep her occupied.

But that moment didn’t last.

Suddenly, Linda declared it was time for cake, clapping her hands in excitement. She hurried to the kitchen, leaving Rob with a playful wink. Tom joined in, telling Kim his mom had made a cake based on her love for gardening, specifically with a succulent theme.

When Linda returned, she was carrying a large, beautiful cake. At first, it looked perfect. But then Kim noticed the candles—29 of them, flickering brightly. Her eyes moved to the writing on the cake, and her heart sank.

The cake read: “One Year Before You’re Expired.”

The room went silent. Friends exchanged uneasy looks, not sure what to say. Kim stood there, shocked, staring at the words. The joy of the evening faded. She felt sick and struggled to stay calm.

Meanwhile, Linda was grinning, clearly thinking her “joke” was funny. Kim’s friend Erica accidentally spilled her wine, but Kim didn’t even notice.

Tom looked equally shocked, stammering as he tried to process what had just happened. Linda defended her joke, saying men preferred younger women, hinting that Kim needed to take the hint. She shot Tom a look that suggested he should act on it.

Kim felt nothing but anger. She wanted to throw the cake at Linda but held back. Tom, embarrassed, mumbled that this wasn’t what he expected and that Linda had crossed a line. Linda dismissed it, calling it just a joke.

Rob, who had been watching, stepped in. He calmly told Linda he had thought they could connect, but he realized he was wrong. He added that if she believed women expired at 30, maybe he should look for younger company too.

Linda’s smile faded. For the first time, she seemed genuinely shocked, unsure how to respond. Rob politely wished Kim a happy birthday and left, leaving Linda to deal with the fallout.

Linda tried to shrug it off, claiming people couldn’t take a joke. But the mood had already changed. Tom finally spoke up, apologizing to Kim for not stepping in sooner and admitting Linda’s actions were unacceptable. Linda tried to laugh it off again, but Tom didn’t back down, telling her she had crossed the line.

For Linda, the real surprise came when Tom scolded her in front of everyone. Her jaw dropped, and for the first time, her son stood up to her. Linda tried to brush it off, but it didn’t work, and she eventually retreated, clearly upset.

The party continued, though awkwardly. Erica cleaned up the wine, and the music played again. Linda sulked in the corner, her earlier excitement gone. She quietly ate snacks, sipping her wine, avoiding eye contact with everyone.

Later that night, after the guests had left, Tom and Kim were finally alone. Tom held Kim close, promising her that Linda would no longer interfere. Kim, who had heard this before, felt like she could trust him this time.

That birthday was the last time Linda had any say in Kim’s celebrations. Kim thought about getting Linda a funny cake for her next birthday—maybe one shaped like a tombstone made of marzipan.
