This event occurred at my wedding. Being highly detail-oriented, my husband and I meticulously planned our wedding. Every detail was color-coordinated, and everything was aesthetically perfect. Our chosen colors were pink and black.

I requested that our parents and grandparents wear our wedding colors to ensure the photos would look cohesive. I personally informed each person about the color scheme and expressed how much I wanted everyone to coordinate. Everyone seemed to be on board with this idea.

My husband’s grandparents went shopping to find clothes that explicitly matched our wedding party, which I found incredibly sweet and appreciated greatly. My mother and I shopped for my grandparents, as they had requested our assistance, ensuring they also matched.

I offered to take my mother-in-law shopping to select an outfit, but she declined, saying she would go with her friends. I agreed and then forgot about it. On the night of the rehearsal, my mom asked my MIL about her outfit, and she mentioned a long dress in our wedding colors.

The following day, as I was getting ready in the bridal suite, my MIL arrived wearing a royal purple ball gown. She rarely wore makeup, so I was shocked to see her with neon blue eyeshadow and bright pink lipstick. Her husband had a matching tie. I was furious but chose to ignore it to avoid spoiling my big day.

During the photos, my FIL asked how he looked, and I replied, “You and MIL stand out like sore purple thumbs.” He asked what I meant, and I explained that they knew the dress code and now looked out of place. He mentioned he wore what was given to him and would inform my MIL.

Later that night, my mother-in-law confronted me about my issue. I asked why she had lied about her outfit. She admitted she never bought a dress matching our wedding colors and had planned to wear the purple gown because it felt more true to her.

I responded that was fine, I would fix the pictures in post-production. She insisted I would not alter anything since they paid for the photos. I told her any picture I posted with her in it would be altered on my end, so they had no control over what I did. I then excused myself and enjoyed the rest of my wedding.

My MIL often tries to make things about her, making comments like, “I am the mother of the groom; my opinion counts.” Or “I can make decisions too; I’m the mother of the groom, and we are helping pay for this wedding.” My parents covered 70% of the wedding costs, while my in-laws paid for the photographer and rehearsal dinner. The photographer was their friend and charged them only $800 for the entire night. The rehearsal dinner cost $300 as they chose the cheapest options for everything.
