With help from his mother, a baby elephant made a lucky escape when a crocodile tried to bite his trunk.
A crocodile came out of the water and grabbed the trunk of a baby elephant, who was swimming in the deep part of a waterhole in the African forest. The herd stood watching in shock as they fought to protect the helpless calf from the predator.
The young elephant scared the crocodile and managed to back away from danger, forcing the reptile to retreat into the muddy water.
A baby elephant was drinking at a waterhole in the African bush, while a crocodile waited just a few feet away.
Suddenly, the crocodile leaped out and clamped its jaws around the calf’s trunk. Francois Borman captured the stunning scene with his camera at Mana Pools in Zimbabwe’s Zambezi Valley.
“This was the last thing I expected to see! I had been in the jungle for hours, hoping for some action,” he said.
“I usually set a high bar for what I capture, but this was incredible to witness.”
“The crocodile noticed the small elephants coming to drink and began stalking the calf that was playing in the shallow water,” Borman explained.
“The baby elephant seemed excited about the water, jumping into the deep, murky pool and rolling around, trumpeting loudly.”
Francois Borman, a skilled photographer and farmer, took these amazing pictures near Mana Pools in Zimbabwe’s Zambezi Valley.
The rest of the herd gathered around, making loud sounds as they tried to protect the tiny elephant.
The baby elephant shook off the crocodile and stumbled back with help from his mother.
“It had no idea about the dangers in the muddy waters,” Borman added.
The calf bent down to drink from the pool, unsure how to use its trunk properly. After a while, it tried using its trunk to reach the water.
“It was chaotic when the crocodile grabbed the baby elephant’s trunk.” The calf let out a loud squeal and charged at the crocodile, fighting for its life.
“Time seemed to freeze as the calf struggled, pulling the crocodile almost completely out of the water.” Other elephants rushed in, and the crocodile finally let go.
“When I looked at my photos, I was thrilled because I knew they were something special.”
“Wildlife photographers spend hours waiting for moments like this, and shots like these make it all worth it.”
