Cheryl Tiegs, recognized as one of America’s earliest supermodels, became a household name 46 years ago due to her well-known pink bikini poster.

Throughout the years, she graced the front pages of top publications such as Sports Illustrated, Vogue, and Time. However, she also transitioned into a passionate supporter of environmental issues and an advocate for health and wellness.

Now 77 years old, Tiegs first entered the modeling world after a friend pointed out that she had the ideal appearance for it. In the beginning, she participated in small fashion shows for little money, but everything changed at 17 when she appeared in Glamour magazine. That moment catapulted her to international recognition.

From there, her success soared, leading to multiple features in Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit editions, Time, and even being named in Men’s Health magazine’s 2012 list of the 100 Hottest Women of All Time.

Reflecting on her time in the industry, Tiegs has commented on how much modeling has transformed compared to the past. She noted that models during her time didn’t receive the same level of exposure they do now, with the rise of social media and entertainment news programs such as Entertainment Tonight. “It was more about living in the moment, and I appreciated that,” she told Artful Living.

During the 1980s, Tiegs ventured into acting, making appearances in television shows like Moonlighting and Just Shoot Me, as well as films including The Brown Bunny and Sharknado 4 in the 2000s and 2010s.

Despite trying her hand at acting, she ultimately decided to prioritize other aspects of her life, such as her personal relationships and being a mother. Over the years, she had multiple marriages and became a parent to three children, including twin boys who were born via surrogate in 2001.

In addition to her career, Tiegs has been deeply involved in environmental activism. She has worked to bring attention to climate change and conservation efforts. Her commitment to these causes has taken her to locations like the Canadian Arctic and Mexico’s Copper Canyon to gain firsthand insight into ecological concerns.

However, in 2016, Tiegs stirred controversy when she spoke out against Sports Illustrated’s decision to feature plus-size model Ashley Graham on the cover. She argued that it promoted an unhealthy body image.

“I’m not a fan of celebrating fuller-figured women just because it makes them seem glamorous. Your waist should be less than 35 inches—that’s what Dr. Oz has said, and I stand by it,” Tiegs stated in an interview with E! News. “I just don’t believe it’s good for one’s health. Her face is stunning, absolutely gorgeous. But from a health standpoint, I don’t think it’s beneficial over time.”

In 2017, she defended her remarks by saying that the media had exaggerated the situation. “Honestly, I was only trying to express concern for those who are either underweight or on the opposite end of the spectrum,” she clarified that year. “It’s all about choosing a lifestyle that’s truly healthy. That’s it. I don’t personally know her, so I can’t judge her health. That’s something only she can determine.”

Now at 77, Tiegs stays fit by practicing yoga, eating well, and surrounding herself with encouraging people. Above all, she believes that staying active and finding happiness in hobbies such as reading and spending time with uplifting friends is key to well-being.

Cheryl Tiegs remains an enduring symbol of beauty while continuing to champion environmental and wellness initiatives, combining her supermodel legacy with a strong dedication to healthy living and sustainability.
