Just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade, Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day, made a bold statement at a concert in London.
He said he planned to give up his U.S. citizenship. Armstrong learned about the court’s decision during the show and told the crowd in London he was angry about the U.S. not protecting women’s reproductive rights. He said this was why he wanted to give up his citizenship.
In his passionate speech, Armstrong called the world “stupid” and described the U.S. as a “miserable” place. He said he didn’t want to go back to the U.S. after his band’s European tour.
Despite his strong feelings, Green Day did return to the U.S. for shows in Chicago and San Francisco.
They also plan to tour in South America, with performances in Brazil and Argentina in September. The London crowd cheered Armstrong’s words.
He let the cheers last before telling them he was serious about giving up his citizenship. Armstrong also hinted he might move to the U.K., saying, “You’re going to see a lot more of me in the coming days.”
The next day, Armstrong took the stage again in London. He repeated his disapproval of the Supreme Court’s ruling, shouting, “F*** the Supreme Court and America.”
After that, Green Day played their popular song “American Idiot.”
Armstrong isn’t the only musician speaking out against the Supreme Court’s decision, which shifts the job of protecting women’s reproductive rights from the federal level to the states.
Many states with conservative leadership are now working to limit access to abortion, restricting women’s access to important healthcare.
Singer Billie Eilish also shared her frustration with the decision during a concert in July 2022.
“It’s a really dark day for women in the U.S. I just have to say that because I can’t think about it anymore right now,” Eilish said.
She dedicated her song “Your Power” to the conservative justices responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade. “This song is one of our favorites, and it’s about power and the importance of not abusing it.”
