Just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court declared Roe v. Wade invalid, Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong made a bold move at a London show by saying he would give up his U.S. citizenship.

When he found out about the court’s decision during the concert, Armstrong spoke to the London crowd, showing his anger about the U.S. not safeguarding women’s reproductive rights and his choice to renounce his citizenship.

In his heartfelt talk, Armstrong condemned the current world situation, calling it “stupid” and labeling the U.S. as a “miserable” nation.

He also mentioned that he did not want to go back to the U.S. after the band’s European tour. Even with these feelings, Green Day has planned to come back to the U.S. for shows in Chicago and San Francisco and aims to tour South America with concerts in Brazil and Argentina in September.

Even though Armstrong criticized the U.S., the London crowd clapped for him. He let the applause continue before telling the audience he was serious about giving up his U.S. citizenship. Armstrong also suggested he might move to the U.K., saying to the London fans, “You’re going to see a lot more of me in the coming days.”

The next day, Armstrong went back to the London stage and restated his disagreement with the Supreme Court’s decision, shouting, “F*** the Supreme Court and America.” After his remark, Green Day played their popular song “American Idiot.”

Armstrong isn’t the only musician responding to the Supreme Court’s conservative choice, which moves the duty of protecting women’s reproductive rights from the federal government to individual states.

Many red states are now trying to limit access to abortions, reducing women’s access to vital healthcare services. Singer Billie Eilish also showed her anger at the Supreme Court’s decision during a July 2022 performance.

“Today is a really, really dark day for women in the U.S. I’m just going to say that as I cannot bear to think about it any longer at this moment,” Eilish said. She then dedicated her song “Your Power” to the conservative Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade.

“The song we’re about to perform is, I think, one of our favorites, and it’s about the concept of power and how we need to always remember not to abuse it.”
