All I wanted was to be a supportive and glamorous mother-of-the-groom. I imagined myself as the proud mom, cheering on my son, and being there for him on such an important day. But I never thought my efforts to make everything perfect would turn into something we all regret.

When Mark introduced Alice to us, I was caught off guard. My son, Mark, a lawyer at a top firm right out of Stanford, was serious and goal-driven. Alice, in contrast, was easygoing and relaxed. She worked as a self-taught coder, freelancing from their small apartment. They were different in many ways, but they seemed happy together. As people say, opposites attract.

When Mark proposed, he wanted to make it special. He called me and asked if his dad and I could surprise Alice, since she wasn’t close to her own family. “She needs to feel welcomed, Mom,” Mark said. Of course, we showed up, happy to support them. Despite my doubts, I wanted the best for them and offered to pay for the wedding. James, my husband, and I had saved for Mark’s education, but with all his scholarships, we still had money left. I thought using it for their wedding would help us bond with Alice during the planning.

But as time passed, it became clear that our tastes didn’t match. From flowers to decorations, Alice and I couldn’t agree. I liked classic roses, but she preferred peonies. As things got tense, I decided to step back. “You take charge, Alice,” I said. “Just tell me the bridesmaids’ colors, so I don’t wear the same.” She promised me that they wouldn’t wear green, so I chose a green dress for myself.

Weeks later, Alice sent me pictures of her favorite wedding dresses. I was glad she shared, but it hurt a bit that she didn’t invite me to go dress shopping with her. I looked at the dresses and thought her top pick wasn’t the most flattering. I gently suggested another might be better. Alice disagreed and stuck with her choice. I felt like my opinions didn’t matter, even though we were helping pay for the wedding.

James told me to stop stressing and focus on enjoying myself. So, I went shopping and found an emerald green dress that made me feel beautiful. The color brought out my eyes, and James loved how I looked in it. For the first time, I felt excited about the wedding.

As the big day neared, everything seemed ready. On the morning of the wedding, I put on my green dress, feeling excited to watch Mark marry Alice. When I got to the venue, I noticed some people whispering but didn’t think much of it. I felt elegant and confident, ready to celebrate.

Before the ceremony, I went to see Alice. The moment she saw me, her happy expression changed. Her eyes filled with tears as she looked at my dress. “Why did you do this, Claire?” she cried.

I was shocked. “What do you mean?” I asked, totally confused.

“My dream dress,” Alice sobbed. “You’re wearing it—in green!”

Stunned, I tried to explain that I hadn’t noticed the resemblance. The color difference made the dresses look completely separate to me. But Alice didn’t believe me. She accused me of trying to make the wedding about myself because I hadn’t agreed with her during the planning.

Mark came in after hearing the argument. He looked between us, trying to understand what had happened. “Mom, please,” he said. “Let’s just get through this.”

I left the room, feeling defeated. I had only wanted to be part of this special day, and now I felt like the bad guy. Looking back, I wonder if I was too focused on my idea of a perfect wedding. Maybe I should have stepped back earlier and let Alice have her day. It wasn’t about me—it was about them.

Was I wrong? I’m not sure I’ll ever know.
