A mom brought her eight-year-old girl to a salon for a haircut before school started. They waited for their turn, and then the girl took a seat for her haircut. The hairdresser started to comb her hair and quickly discovered something alarming.
She found thousands of small insects in the girl’s hair. Upon closer inspection, the hairdresser realized these were lice.
The hairdresser immediately contacted the girl’s mother to discuss the issue. The mother replied that she knew about the lice but didn’t know how to remove them from her daughter’s head and didn’t think it was a serious issue.
The hairdresser was stunned by the mother’s response. However, she felt it was important to share this story publicly to highlight the dangers of lice, particularly in young kids.
Luckily, there are many ways to treat lice. If you find out you or someone at home has lice, it’s best to use lice treatment products or consult a doctor right away. Lice can easily spread through close physical contact or by sharing personal items, especially among children in schools.
Signs of lice include:
severe itching on the scalp, body, and genital area.
a sensation of something moving in the hair.
finding lice on the scalp, clothes, or other body parts. These lice are usually as big as a sesame seed, or a bit bigger.
eggs of lice, known as nits, attached to hair. Nits are tiny and hard to spot, often found near the ears and the back of the neck. They stick to hair and can be confused with dandruff, but are harder to remove.
small red bumps from scratching can appear on the scalp, neck, and shoulders. These may become infected if scratched.
bite marks are common in areas like the groin, upper thighs, waist, and around the pelvis.
