The Robinsons bought a remote house to start a farm.
Mrs. Robinson had her second baby, a boy, within four months. They set up his room right after moving in, preparing for his arrival.
The Robinsons loved animals. Their previous landlord didn’t allow dogs, so they were excited to get a puppy now.
They went to an animal shelter with their son, Matias, who was six. They wanted a gentle dog that could grow up with their farm kids.
After touring the shelter and hearing sad stories about the animals, they couldn’t decide on a puppy.
At the end of their visit, they met Benson, a 4-year-old pit bull. He looked hopeless, standing back with his head down and tail tucked.
The shelter volunteers shared Benson’s tough past. He was used in dog fights and abandoned. A couple had adopted him from the shelter, but returned him two weeks later because of his aggression.
Despite the shelter’s advice against it, Mr. Robinson wanted to give Benson a chance. They adopted him. Walking him on a leash was hard, but they managed to get him home.
Benson was very withdrawn and suspicious at first. But he slowly warmed up, especially to Matias.
After the birth of their baby, Mrs. Robinson introduced him to Benson. Benson gently licked and sniffed the baby. The Robinsons then knew Benson was a wonderful dog
.
Two months later, Benson woke them with loud barking. He tried to reach the baby by biting the crib. Fearing for the baby, they grabbed him and realized he wasn’t breathing.
They rushed him to the hospital. Doctors performed CPR. The doctor said the baby wouldn’t have survived much longer without help.
Benson became a hero. He was a dog no one believed in, saved by the Robinsons, and he ended up saving their baby.
