New Puppies to Cheer at Boston Marathon in Honor of Beloved Dog Spencer

In a touching continuation of a beloved tradition, the owners of Spencer, the cherished Boston Marathon dog who passed away, are bringing in the new recruits—Jimmy and Jade, two adorable pups, to wave the #BostonStrong flag at the iconic race!

Rich Powers shared his emotions with TMZ Sports during the unveiling of Spencer’s statue in Ashland State Park. It’s been a little over a year since the golden retriever, adored by many, lost his battle to cancer. But his spirit remains a beacon of inspiration for marathon runners.

A Statue for an Angelic Pup

“It’s a wonderful tribute to an extraordinary dog,” Powers said. “Living with Spencer was like having an angel in our home for nearly 14 years. We tried our best to share his magic with the world, and this statue allows us to keep doing that, to keep inspiring people.”

Following Spencer’s passing, Powers welcomed two new therapy dogs into his life—Jimmy and Jade, both English cream golden retrievers. These pups are set to continue Spencer’s legacy by holding the #BostonStrong flags, offering support and motivation to the thousands of marathon participants.

“Spencer was laid to rest with his marathon flags and a medal,” Powers noted. “And now, Jimmy, and maybe Jade too, will stand by his statue this marathon Monday, holding Spencer’s flags.”

Marathon Monday: A Day of Remembrance and Encouragement

The 128th Boston Marathon, happening on April 15th, promises a special moment for runners. Amid the challenging race, participants will find encouragement from Jimmy (and potentially Jade), who will be there cheering them on, a living tribute to Spencer and the joy he brought to the event.

“Jimmy’s getting pretty good with the flag. Jade, who’s just four months old, is still learning,” Powers shared with a smile.

This marathon Monday, as runners push through one of their most challenging endeavors, they’ll have the support of two very special pups, keeping Spencer’s proud legacy alive.
